I just read this as well. So sad...

The story behind the song is interesting, however. I guess I never knew it (or if I did, I'd forgotten!). Of course, the rumour always was that it was REALLY about Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

I also had not ever heard it was about her. She would of only been 4 when the song was released? I always heard LSD also and also the rumor that it was about a picture of Julian Lennon. What's the story about the girl? Does anyone know it? I'm curious now. Duh--just read the link! Ridiculous I say.

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a song by English rock band The Beatles, written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for the group's 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
At the time of its release, the Beatles claimed that the inspiration for the song came from a drawing by John Lennon's son, Julian, which Julian called "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". The song sparked controversy when released, including being banned by the BBC because of the supposed reference to the drug LSD,[1] with the letters of the title spelling Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Lennon would later deny the reference during an interview with Rolling Stone. Despite John Lennon's denial of the title and content of the song having to do with LSD,[2] on June 2, 2004, McCartney told BBC that the song is, in fact, about LSD.[3]

I have read that the song was about a picture that Julian had made and shown his father. Julian actually titled the picture when John asked him what it was. I can certainly imagine John the songwriter getting excited at hearing those words "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". I can also imagine the words and imagery coming to him from taking LSD, which it's documented that he did. So I'm guessing both stories are true!

But for the article to associate Lucy's young death with that of Lennon, Epstein and Sutcliff - are they kidding?

Little off-topic, but I found this interesting in the wiki article:

In 1974, Elton John released a cover version as a single. Recorded at the Caribou Ranch, it featured background vocals and guitar by John Lennon under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O'Boogie.

I do like Sir Elton's version of the song, but did not know that John played on it!
