LM, Butch is cute! I have a soft spot for boxers. One of my closest friends had a boxer called Honey, and when we had our first babies within a few months of each other we often used to have walks together with Honey. She was so gentle with the little chaps!

I was checking some backup cd roms today and found a pic of Jethro when we first got him. Christmas 2000.

I have some sad news.

Our beautiful Akita, Cal, was fifteen years old, nearly 100 in human terms. We had him for fourteen years, since the end of 1994. In that time he was a loving and devoted companion.

Unfortunately when dogs get old it becomes way too obvious and over the last six months Cal's deterioration was sad to see. He couldn't walk properly, kept falling over and had endless 'accidents' inside the house. His daily walks were reduced from two to one and each morning walk which once took 40 minutes now took 90 as he had to stop and rest every few yards.

We'd hoped he would just peacefully pass away, although Mike was scared he'd find him dead on Christmas morning. That didn't happen, but the eager dog who once haunted the Christmas dinner table waiting for scraps of meat was no more. He didn't come near us once during lunch.

Yesterday Mike took him to the vet and had him put down. It was horribly upsetting for him because Cal was really his dog. All I feel now is absence. I expect him to walk through the patio door at any second. No longer is he sleeping in the backyard or on the living room tiles. There is no dog hair everywhere. We put his water bowl away and his food bowl.

While sad, it was humane. He's at peace now.:-(

Ive always been a dreamer
12-30-2008, 10:18 PM
Oh Julie - I'm so sorry that your family has lost Cal. I guess all you can do at a time like this is to count your blessings and try to focus on all of the wonderful times. I know he will be missed.

eaglesvet
12-31-2008, 03:41 AM
Julie, Cal really had a long, long life for a large breed dog, living to the age of 15. It sounds like he probably had significant arthritis hindering his mobility; and unfortunately, that often is the deciding factor as to "when" to consider euthanasia. You and Mike realized that Cal was suffering at this point in his life, and graciously allowed him to pass on to a better place where all dogs are free to run and play forever. May your happy memories of him lift your spirits over the days and months to come.

Glennsallnighter
12-31-2008, 04:26 AM
Aww Julie! I'm so sorry! My sympathies go out to all your family. At least you have many happy memories of a time when Cal was happier. At least he is at peace now and I'm glad that Mike didn't suffer his worst nightmare. :grouphug:

Julie, I teared up while reading your post about Cal. All of us here who have lost a pet shares your feeling of loss. Just like losing a human loved one, we have to go through the stages of mourning. I'm so sorry.

Thank you for your kind words, everyone. Actually, reading those thoughts was the first time a tear came to my eyes. I've blocked it out. You are right - the memories remain.

We don't know if we'll get another dog. If we do we will wait several months. We were thinking of a Finnish Spitz which would be like Cal in miniature. Mike would like an Irish wolfhound.

Hi Julie, I can completely see where you are coming from, so sorry for your loss, it has nearly been 3 years since we lost our 14 Year Old German Shepard, Assi, she ment more to me than the wife and kids, ( well the same as, but less hassle ) it was like a part of my life had gone, when you have a pet for soooo long they are more than a pet, they become family, around 5 Years ago we losed our old tabby cat, Lucky she was 16 so we were quite lucky with how long they lived, also considering that at 1 year old Assi started to develop the shakes in her hind quarter, as we had grown up with Sheps, I knew what this was, took her to the vets, he said both her hips were shot and required £3000.00 worth of work, I would have done it, but as the breeder was no fool, I took Assi to see him straight away and he advised against the surgery but never to over exersise the dog, alas, he was correct, at 13 she had spine problems, ( discs, which I have also had 7-8 operations for ) and then had a stroke about 6 months later, so hard to let go and I said right up to 2 weeks ago I would never get another Dog or Cat, ( we do have 2 stupid, but very cute rabbits now ) and we get a phone call from a friend who knew someone was losing their flat and had 2, 7 month old Cats, both are Tabby and white, we have had more quality time with these 2 in 2 weeks than 16 years with Lucky ( she had an attitude problem ????? ) one called Simba and one called Amra ? Amra did not know his name so when we took them to the Vets to have their manhood bits done I changed his name to Felder, did not go down to well, but heh we are all calling him Felder now ( but this one is stupid and I doubt he will ever learn his name ) if I knew how to I would upload photo's, this has taken me about an hour to do !
All the best and Happy New Year
Gary

Julie, I'm so sad to hear about Cal. He was a magnificent dog, and had a wonderful and long life with your family. I know how you feel so much. When our old cat Gemma was failing last year, we hoped so much that she would die naturally, but in the end we had to make that tough decision to take her to the vet. You have done the best you can do for Cal, and in due course you will be able to remember the happy times with him.

My new-found ability to post a photo has moved to a new thread...
Our animal hospital hosts a pet photographer annually, who works magic with the camera and the animals. I had never had my pets professionally photographed before, mainly because my cat was ancient and my dog was young, and I was afraid what would happen in the presence of a strange man and camera. 2008, however, saw the passing of 18 1/2 y.o. Shelby and the acquisition of a new red tabby kitten named Bamboo (also affectionately known as Bamboozle and Bamboodle and Boo...) Anyway, this is the amazing professional photo of my two animal children.

Bamboo is about 8 months old in this shot. He is one of the friendliest kittens I have ever met. He gives Shea, my 3 1/2 y.o. Smooth Collie, a real run for her money, though! They are great playmates! Shea was named for the NY Mets stadium which, many of you may know, closed this past summer as a new home, Citi Field, is being constructed next door. However, my hubby's threat to change our dog's name to Citi will not come to pass!

Most people have not heard of nor seen a Smooth Collie. Basically, she is a variant of the traditional long-haired, or Rough, Collie. Shea's mom looked exactly like her, while her dad looked like Lassie. In her litter of 8 pups, 4 were smooth and 4 were rough. We knew we wanted a smooth, but they are bred much less commonly because they are not as popular. We looked at breeders everywhere from Virginia to Maine, and ended up buying her from a breeder in Vermont, 40 miles from the Canadian border. We drove up and back on a Sunday, 16 hours round trip to get her, with 6- and 9-y.o. boys in the car...what an adventure that was!

Since Shea is the only other girl in my household in whom I can confide, she is the one who knows all of my Eagles fantasies ...well, at least the ones I think about while we are on our two 30-minute walks per day. We also have a playdate with one of my good friends down the street and her beagle Bailey 3 or 4 days a week...that way Shea can run (like a thoroughbred!) and Suzanne and I can gab over coffee outside!

A week and a half ago I watched my friends dog for a few days while they were in Vegas. I didn't think it would be all that great to have a dog in my apartment but they are really good friends of mine and I would do anything for them so I told them that I would watch their dog for them. I was surprised that I actually missed the dog the day after they picked him up. Now i'm starting to think about getting myself one. Something small since i live in a little apartment. I haven't had a dog or any pet for that matter since I was about 12 years old but I think it may be time for a pet after all these years.

Brooke, I think that's a great idea!

PaB, if you like cats Brooke has a good point. You can go away for a couple days at a time and leave your cat(s) home. Can't do that with a dog. ;) (Not that I have anything against dogs - I love them too!)

TBF, your Ringo looks so much like my Buddy they could be brothers! I need to take some new pics and post them here.

I'm still giving it all some thought. I appreciate the ideas Brooke and Cathy. I will definitely keep that in mind. I never used to be a cat person growing up but my college roommate and I found a baby Calico kitten underneath the football stadium one evening after study hall and it was sooo starved. You could see every bone in it's tiny little body. We felt so bad that we took it home and nursed it back to health. It was the first and only cat that I ever had. I've always been more of a dog person but these days I'm starting to like cats more and more.

I submitted an application with the labrador organization anyway, and we're waiting to hear if we've been "accepted". If we have, they'll come out and do an in home inspection before they'll consider us for adoption. !!

I hope it's a dog we end up with not a child!

Even our mail carrier has gotten in the act. She found out we lost Layla and today she stuck a handwritten note in our mail telling us about a friend of hers whose dog just had a litter of puppies! Not sure I want a brand new puppy, tho.

Everyone on here has such cute pets! I've been meaning to post on this thread for such a long time, but I never have the pictures ready.

Molly-- Good luck with the labrador organization. I've gone through a couple of things like that and have had very good outcomes.

This is one of my babies, Hunter. A few years ago, a co-worker of mine was having to get rid of her young cat due to her starting a family. She was worried that the cat wasn't going to get enough attention. Well, all she had to do was show me a picture of him and I was a goner. He was so small when first I got him that used to call him my Little Hunter, but that name isn't quite as accurate now that he is weighing in at 20 pounds  This is him on his favorite lounge spot. I usually keep decorative pillows on top of the ottoman, but the spoiled brat knocks them off every time :unimpressed:

I have a couple more cats and a golden retriever, but I'll have to get those pictures up a little later.

Mel, he is pretty. 20 pounds?! That is a big cat!

My cat Beyonce had weighed 15 pounds, but when she went in to the vet for her check up she weighed just under 14 pounds, so they praised her for losing a pound! She stays outdoors mostly in the summer, so I guess she gets more exercise.

I want to thank TBF for reviving this thread - it reminds everybody to post pictures of their pets!

LM, it looks like you've got yourself a good dog there.

Brooke, it's always nice to see pictures of Beyonce, old or new. She looks ferocious there!

MR, Hunter is very handsome. I'd just like to reach in and pet him!

Keep the pics coming!

Hunter looks just like my Lucky, who is a real character. What colour is Hunter? He looks black in the picture. Lucky is dark gray, or "blue" as they say in cat circles.

Hey, I thought I heard something! So sorry,I have been so darn busy the last couple of weeks, I have had no time to post at all, and I am really feeling the withdrawal :-(. I have all these end-of-school-year things to do with each of my boys' classes, it's as if I'm the student! Anyway, I'll try to post more soon....

Buddy looks exactly like my very first two kitties who were brothers, Toby and Shelby. I have to say he is extremely handsome---definitely one of my favorite color patterns! The breed of both these cats is Domestic Short Hair. Buddy's coloration is known as a 'brown tabby'. In particular, because the pattern is more the parallel thinner tiger stripes, he is a 'brown mackerel tabby' (don't ask me why.) The other pattern, which is more the rounded thicker whorled stripes, would be known as the 'brown classic tabby.' (I know, everyone calls this color gray, but it is brown in the tabby world.)

I promise I will catch up on other news later! Bye!

I know I have a bunch of reading about the European leg of tour...I have to set aside a nice chunk of time to enjoy it. I've heard there is some nice casual clothing to view! :inlove:

Best suggestion I can think of.......

Put on your all-time favorite Eagles tunes, watch how he responds and then name him after the lead vocalist on his favorite track! Or just call him "Desperado".

Prettymaid
06-08-2009, 07:23 PM
There are several ways you can go here Willie:

1. You've rescued him, so there is the ever-popular 'Lucky'.

2.You mentioned he was found near railroad tracks, so you could go with 'Hobo'.

3. You already have a dog named Pickes, so you could name him 'Relish' or another popular condiment.

4. You could continue with your rock star theme (Ringo) and come up with a good one for him. (Axl? - nah!)

5. Or you could just call him Jack. He looks like a Jack.

Awww! He's wonderful!

Coming up with an Eagles name might be tough. How about something sort of related to the band and still musical like Seger or Jackson (Jaxson).

Or maybe Otis or Deacon.

Thanks for all the suggestions--loved lots of them. Gotta say Cynd--I didn't think of Desperado, and that would of been a great one considering he was a stray. And Cathy--the whole Pickles thing was thought about also, a friend suggested Kosher so we would have Kosher Pickles. I have to admit, I tried to suggest several Eagles related names to my family but I was pretty much vetoed every time (I think they're on to me!). The only one that they even considered was Shadow and only because I don't believe any of them knew what the reference was but it also finally got voted down. I was really pushing the name Timmy (at Ticky's suggestion thru facebook) but it was a no way also.

After much debate last night, we have all decided on the name.... RUFUS! Don't ask me why because I simply don't know.

Last night he finally made a little noise, whined a couple of times on the patio but that was it. Still no barking. He had me a little nervous, was jumping up on the privacy fence and checking out the perimeter like he might be trying to get out but then settled down. I told him he has it pretty good here if he sticks around but if he insist on leaving to go back to wherever he came from, to do it now before I get anymore attached or spend mega amounts of $$ at the vet. Hubby, niece, kids all were trying to tell me that I need to remember that he has probably been fending for himself and running all over and that it will take awhile for him to get used to staying in one good home and trusting us. I sure hope they are right. He seem fine this morning, went outside and did his business and is laying at my feet everytime I sit back down from doing something. At least he's not getting up on my lap like he was last night on the couch. That was quite the sight, especially since Pickles was already laying next to me also.

"RUFUS"

That was a "slang term" meaning "outstanding" or "outta site" coined in the movie that Drew Barrymore stared in "Never Been Kissed" or something like that. The punk teenager at the highschool who was hitting on Barrymore came up with the term.

Appropriate for you new furry friend.

Several years ago my cat (Sparky, who is now deceased) climbed about 30 feet up a tree being chased by a dog. He was declawed on the front paws. I couldn't believe he could do that until I actually saw it. Of course, then he couldn't get down with no front claws! Luckily my son came home a bit later and rescued him for me.

Took Rufus to the vet last night and they just called a couple hours ago. He has heartworm. We start treatment on Tuesday for it and they said because he's so young that he has a VERY good chance of surviving it. It's a long expensive treatment tho. We have a history of inheriting animals with medical problems, we've had parvo, shattered bones, eye surgeries etc... I asked my Mom years ago why we were always getting these kind of animals and she told me because we have the heart for it and there was a place in heaven for us for doing it. I told her we may have the heart but we don't have the pocketbook. I'm thinking of starting a "Save Rufus Fund" tomorrow at our party and if everyone that shows gives a dollar-we might get lucky! :hilarious:

Well back to the cooking for this shindig tomorrow! Hope you all can make it! :hilarious:

Treating heartworm now is easier on the pet than it used to be. We no longer use an arsenic derivative, so that alone makes it safer. And I don't know how young Rufus is, but that will definitely work in his favor if his organs are healthy underlying the heartworm disease. If he wasn't symptomatic (coughing, listless, otherwise acting sick), he also will respond better to treatment. Is heartworm very common in Indiana, or is it just because he was a stray for so long that they think he contracted it?

Darn, if I knew about the party in time, I woulda come out to check him out, too!

Thank you EV--you just made me feel a lot better!

Brought him home last night. They want him to stay as calm as we can keep him for 4 weeks. They suggested keeping him caged. He was a stray---can't see caging him keeping him calm even tho I guess he did pretty good at the vet's that way. Lucky for us he's a very calm dog anyways. He seems pretty content just to always be laying by my side (right now he is literally laying on my feet under the table as I type).

EV--they estimate his age between 8-12 months and he had no symptoms at all. Have yet to hear him cough or anything and because he is so young, and hasn't had they for long, organs should be in good condition, they say he should recover 100%. My only concern at this point is the whole keeping him quiet. From what I understand is that as the worms breakdown and hit the bloodstream, to much activity can get the heart pumping faster and could cause clots etc. Am I right? I am going to be a nervous wreck for the next month.

I made arrangements last night for him to be kenneled there next weekend as we go down to Bloomington for Dillon's orientation. He had to go back in anyways to have them listen to his heart and lungs. I just felt better having him there for 2 nights than leaving him at home with my daughter to try to deal with it.

Oh, and in answer to your question. I think heartworm is pretty common in this area because of the mosquito population this time of year. I have always been faithful about leaving my dogs on prevention year around, which Rufus will get also once this is all over with.

eaglesvet
06-19-2009, 12:09 AM
Yes, as the adult worms die in the heart and pulmonary vessels (large blood vessels supplying the lungs), they can lead to clot formation in the smaller blood vessels within the lungs--the likelihood of this increases with activity/exercise. That's why you might note coughing develop a couple of weeks after the treatment. If so, contact your vet.

Yes, much better to board at the vet's than with your daughter. Smart move.

This is Copper as a kitten, the youngest of our five cats. A friend at work found him in the middle of the road one November. It's cold here in November! He was just a month old & he was half starved to death. She named him Copper because she thought he looked like the colour of copper. Then she nursed him back to health & discovered that she was allergic to him. My husband offered to take him without asking me first! (Men!) I thought that five was just one too many. Our other cats were older too. However, he is now about 3 1/3 & we wouldn't be without him. He is so affectionate & he is quite a character!

His is the only picture I have on the computer. Hopefully, soon I will master the art of uploading & posting pictures so I can post pictures of the other four (and of the Eagles!), but I came across this one so I thought that I would let you all see one of my babies, at least.

Awww, what a lucky pup he is, Willie!

We are still going thru the process of joining the SE Wisconsin/Northern Illinois labrador rescue group. So far, our application has been accepted, and last night we had our "home" inspection/visit.

We were visited by a group member and her dog, Bella, a beautiful 1 year old yellow lab.

Zoe was an angel and she and Bella got along wonderfully. Zoe showed off her listening skills and obeyed perfectly. I was so proud of her! We apparently did well as a family, too.

After the visit, the group member told me she would submit her recommendations to the "board" and if we passed -we could move forward adopting a dog. Then she leaned forward and said -"Don't worry-you've passed!"

She's already e-mailed me about a potential "brother" for Zoe. A dog that was listed on Craig's list! I had no idea people put their pets up for adoption on Craig's list and e-bay. What a bad idea!

The lab rescue group tries to contact as many of these people as they can and tell them what some of their other options are so these dogs have a chance of going to a good home.

You guys are posting pictures of wonderful pets. I thought I might as well toss one in of the 18 pound monster my wife rescued. Like every cat she has brought home, this one adopted me. If he isn't curled up between my legs on this recliner, he's in the position in which you see him in the photo. This is the cat that was near death after my neighbor's two Australian Herding dogs got through with him. His right rear leg is nothing but pins holding the leg together. His tail was dislocated and broken. He avoided having his spine snapped though I don't have a clue as to how! He is a mass of scars and about as happy and content a cat as I've ever seen!

His name: "Chuck". Why? I haven't the foggiest clue!

"Airing out the Junk"

Ain't much "junk" left for Chuck <LOL> I remember when Verna brought him home. He was the most beautiful grey color I'd seen on a cat. He's lost some of that charcoal color especially on his belly. And the scars mar the sheen of his coat now, but he's still a good looking cat.

But then, I'm a dog person. I just hesitate to get another dog. There are two possibilities and I care for neither of them" #1 I'd outlive the dog and have to take care of the heartbreaking task of making tough decisions. I've never gotten over the loss of Buckwheat (Chow Lab mix). Or #2 that the dog would outlive me!

TimothyBFan
06-26-2009, 01:40 PM
The only one of our 5 critters that still has "junk" is the new one and that will be taken care of as soon as he is medically able to.

And Mike-the bit about getting a new dog really touched me. I know exactly what you mean. Every time we lose one of our beloved critters, I tell my husband, that's enough, no more animals. I call it "no replace mode". And then some sweet kitty or dog steals there way into one of our hearts and we are right back where we were once again. Our animals tend to live very long lives for us so that's good. My husband has always called our house "The House Of Eternal Life" for animals.

Prettymaid
06-26-2009, 01:54 PM
I decided a long time ago that for those of us who are good pet owners, it is an obligation we have to replace a deceased pet. I know it's hard to get over the loss of a loved pet, but there is always going to be another who needs our help and love. So go out there Mike, and get that dog!

Molly
06-26-2009, 03:08 PM
Mike -it is tough to lose a pet, isn't it? We've lost 3 beautiful labs in 2 years and it's been really hard to get over.

After losing Layla in April -I was sure I'd have to wait awhile to do it again-but there are so many animals that need good forever home and I know we have that-how can I turn away? The way I try to look at it is, that decision of putting the animal down is the last act of love that you will show for your pet.

So much for waiting...we got our approval from the Lab Rescue organization today! I've been notified of a 5 year old black lab named Zoe that needs a home. I wonder what our 2 year old black lab named, ah...Zoe will think!

Go visit your local shelter. Your heart will melt. You won't pick them-they'll pick you...and someone told me that past pets help the new pet "find" you. It's a sweet way to think about it.

The best way to honor your lost friend is to show another dog what a loving owner you are. Think of it this way -he "trained" you to be a wonderful dog owner.

The "same name game" usually only happens when the family is stuck on one name forever, so that when one pet passes on, so does the name...so you get Lucky...and when Lucky dies you get Lucky II...and then Lucky III...and so on....

Hmm, JMHO, but I don't like the numbering idea. The rhyming one, however, could work. Perhaps the new Zoe is young enough to be renamed entirely without too much confusion.

That was the way it was for my cat. When I first got him, I was told he was a female cat by the person I adopted him from (she was a "foster parent" to cats). I took her word for it and didn't bother to double-check. As a result, I called my cat Garbo until I took him in to get shots. I started explaining that I wanted "her" to get "her" shots, and the vet looked at me funny, then said, "You do realize this is a male cat, right?" My jaw dropped and I was so embarrassed! He was immediately re-named Milton. He was a month old at the time, and seems to have adjusted. ;)

BTW, I made the mistake of mentioning the incident to my family when explaining the re-name, and it became a joke that worked its way to the extended family as well - uncles, aunts, cousins.... "Nancy, you do know the difference between boys and girls, right?" Hahaha.

Soda, even pet stores and shelters tell the new owners of young kittens the wrong sex...it happens all the time. They don't look that different to the untrained eye (or in the situations I've just mentioned, the allegedly trained eye) until the testicle fairy descends in full force.

I am! <LOL> But then I'm of the weaker sex so is ain't so bad. My mother brags about changing dirty diapers one-handed while eating Tuna Fish Sandwiches from the other. Now THAT's TOUGH!

But with cats, I've never had one that I thought knew his name (all ours have been males....or started out as male). If they do know it, they ignore me when I try to get them to do anything. Doesn't stop me from keeping them though. I don't think we've been without a cat now since Verna and I married.

Dogs, they're different. They are just furry little humans. Well, except for one Poodle I used to have. Stupidest dog I've ever come across. But he had fun! Just couldn't train him to do anything at all. Registered with a pedigree a mile long too. Grew up with short legs and a long body. Looked more like a hairy dachshund than a Poodle. After him, I started getting dogs from the Rescue Shelter instead of dog breeders.

For some reason, I always get rhymey with my pets names. I call Zoe "Zoe Bowie", Layla was "Layla Bayla". My kids are glad I didn't do that to them...as in Tom Bomb and the always funny Peter Beater.

When we got our chocolate lab, Molly (it was my nickname first)-my brother owned her mother, Dolly. Peter was a little boy at the time and wanted to name her Dolly, Jr. We ended up naming her "Good Dolly's Miss Molly".

Looks like we missed out on the other Zoe. We're heading up to Appleton, WI on Wednesday to meet with a family who needs to part with their almost 5 year old black lab named Oliver. I talked to Oliver's mom on the phone last night and she was extremely emotional.

She says Ollie is a beautiful, good boy and they are heartbroken that they need to let him go. He sounds too good to be true. They are desperate to know that he's going to a very good home. They have 3 small children so this will be really tough on everyone. They've even asked that if we take him, could they come down and show the kids where he's living and that he's OK.

Of course, it all depends on how he gets along with Zoe and our impression of how the dog and owners. I'm going with an armload of questions.

Every cat we've adopted has ended up with a middle name of "Diane". Now admittedly, "Chuck Diane" is sort of lame. And, it's also lame that all of our cats have been Male! Go figer! Oh, Buckwheat was "Buckwheat Diane" too. But she was a She.

An updated pic of Bamboo (now that he is no longer a kitten at over one year of age) with Graham earlier this month. You can see the thick rounded whorl pattern of a classic tabby, in contrast to the thinner parallel tiger stripes of a mackerel tabby like PM's Buddy/TBF's Ringo/Mike's Chuck Diane.

Molly--I am so happy for you!! Post pics as soon as you can.

Fingers crossed tomorrow goes well when we introduce Zoe to Oliver.

If we take him -I think we might need to change his name. I'm having trouble getting into the name Oliver or Ollie.

On the list of possible names: Cash (since he's the "man in black-a black lab), Jaxson, Brewer (for my team!) and hubby wants a "beer name"... so, Stout (a really dark almost black beer) or Barley.

Good grief! I'm talking like we're taking him for certain.

Eva...your son is a handsome boy and the cat is beautiful!

eaglesvet

Thx, Molly. I must have missed the fact that you found a new possible dog, but congrats! It seems like Brewer fits a couple of bills, there...favorite team, plus a beer name...I don't know, TBF, it should still be in the running! Cubbie is good, too, since he is black like a bear. I'm partial to Jaxson (or Jackson), as I've mentioned, it's always been a favorite name of mine and it's not used too often. For other beer names, there's always Heineken, Budweiser, Coors, and the ever subtle Sam Adams (if you're into middle names like Mike is!)

ETA: I just thought of another one, that I saw at a restaurant we stopped at tonight for ice cream...how about Guinness?

Started to post this in "What's Happening In Your Life" but this is probably where it really belongs.

Have you dog owners ever watched one of those contests where the owner directs their hunting dogs to targets using only hand motions and a whistle? It's amazing. There are red "targets" placed around a course "in the wild" and the human can see them but the dogs can't. Something about dogs not being able to see "red" things.

The human directs the dog to go left or right or stop and look for arm signals. The dogs are so well trained that they usually don't even need the whistle commands. They will go "left" or "forward" or "back" or "right" for a few paces and stop and look to the human to get another command. They are only commanded with the whistle as a last resort and they are penalized by the use of the whistle in the contest. They are scored primarily on success in finding all the targets and also on the time it took them to find them.

It is an unbelievable demonstration of obedience and reflects both on the dog's intelligence and on the ability of the trainers to teach them.

Brooke

Mike, one of my sons friends trains labs for duck hunting in this way. He has brought them to our house to train because of a small pond and large field around it. He takes them to field trials all summer and has been quite successful. He has actually placed the targets on the other side of the pond and they have to swim the pond or do whatever he directs to find it. It really is amazing to watch!

Eva- we live too close to Milwaukee to call him any of those beer names! We'd be run out of town. We'd have to have called him Miller or Pabst.

Could be worse -hubby could like cheese more than beer. "Sit, Cheddar!"

Willie...:nahnah: Cubbie!!! May as well call him Bear. NOT!!!!!!

Anyway, we have time to think about names since Oliver's mom and dad have found a family member to take him. This way, the kids can still see him often. Best for everyone involved, I guess. I'm not even sad about it since they seem really happy with their decision. I'm sure Oliver will be fine.

So, we'll keep searching.

Well, it took a lot of searching, phone calls, e-mails and having my heart broken a time or two -but it was worth the wait. We found our newest family member!

Miss Molly's Good Gracious (Gracie). She's a one year old pure bred chocolate lab. Her birthday is 4-26 which ironically is the date that Layla died.

She's sweet and shy and has totally taken to Steve and Peter. She was surrendered at a local shelter by a family who said she "bugged" them and that she was a "pain in the a**". When the family member dropped her at the shelter the worker asked him if he'd like to say goodbye to her (they'd had her since she was 6 weeks old) and he simply said "No" and walked out.

She's never been around other dogs, she was tied up a lot, they never taught her a thing -but in the few days we've had her we've taught her sit, stay, down, she waits on a rug with Zoe while we dish up her food. She's learned the yard boundries quickly, and Peter is working on fetch with her. It's like she's perfect! I have no idea what her previous family was talking about! Idiots!

Here she is:

Molly-I was so happy when I saw there were some new post in Petmania, my first thought was that maybe you had finally gotten a new family member. Gracie is beautiful and extremely smart the was it sounds. Makes you wonder why some people even try to get an animal if they aren't going to bother working with them and can so easily give them up when they decide they don't want them anymore!

Rufus has an appointment this afternoon for his final (hopefully) blood test to determine if the treatments were successful. Hopefully Larry will be able to take him because I will be working. Larry is having his own issues and might have to go to the doctor himself. Gotten into some kind of poison ivy or oak or something and the poor man is one big itchy rash in spots. :-( Rufus might have to be rescheduled for later this week.

Agreeing with Mike here, but also trying to get a better idea of her exact coloring. The window light, although lovely, is making it difficult for me to tell. Is she black/orange on her body, and grey/lighter orange on her head? Or are the spots the same color in both places?

Prettymaid

GEF, Jethro and the garden are beautiful! I'm looking forward to seeing more of both!

Molly, Gracie is adorable *G* So is Hubby hehehe Nice pool too!

My SIL just got a new pup, a rescue, and they named her Gracie too! She's a mut mix, but looks exactly like a miniature boxer! She's adorable and VERY energetic!! She's not quite a year old and very sweet but barks like crazy when she gets excited, which is pretty easy for her to do. If I find a good picture of her, Ill post it.

Every time I visit this thread, I end up wanting a pet even more. They're all gorgeous!

A friend of mine has just got a German Shepherd named Macy. Apparently she was treated quite badly by her previous owners and she's terrified of everything. It's so sad. I know he'll give her a good home.

Good for him Troub! Maybe EV can help me out here - are there bad pets, or just bad owners? :headshake:

I'll go on record with my opinion that it's usually the owner that's the problem. Even a large number of the Michael Vick dogs that were taken away were able to be rehabilitated and re-homed. So-what does that tell you?

Of course, some breeds are more difficult to handle than others and mis-breeding and overbreeding contributes to "bad pet" issues. But again, a lot of that is the fault of humans!

Yeah to all the new adoptees! :yay:I love hearing about animals finding their forever homes! Good luck to all.

Louise-again just my opionion, but I'd say that dog would benefit from a routine as soon as possible. Dogs really, really need a routine and consistency. It will provide a lot of comfort to that dog and help it adjust to it's new home sooner. The more confident the dog becomes in it's surroundings -the happier it will be and eventually, it will pretty much forget it's bad beginnings. I wish your friend lots of patience -I know from experience it will pay off and they will have a wonderful loving member of the family. Your friend is my hero!

GEF -
I LOVE That statue/Gracie pic, Molly! That's classic! And hey, what could be sexier than a man who lets a dog climb into his innertube? I thank that photo is smokin'! :pimp:

Hmmm, Ditka and the word smokin' are not usually thought of in the same sentence. Must be his sexy farmer tan.

He did have a few good months around 1998, though! (I'm sooo busted if he ever sees this. Luv ya, hon!)
