:rofl:This just cracked me up!!!

Kiwi---showoff!!!! :hilarious: Can you come spend some time and teach my dogs? I can't imagine my dogs being that disciplined. We're hopeless!!!
I loved the goldfish one too.

Okay, I was showing off. I'm very proud of my boy (can you tell?). But he's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination - he's only just turned 2 and is still an exuberant puppy at times. When he knows he's "working" (i.e. he's off the leash to do an agility run) he's really disciplined, but when he's hanging around waiting... not so much!

Oh I love this topic - it's already making me laugh. Smuggler has this adorable way of tilting his head whenever I'm talking to him too. This is an old picture that I posted earlier, but you get the picture (pun intended).

HH - I was told he was a Chorkie - part Yorkie and part Chihuahua. He definitely has both of those in him, but I'm thinking there is something else going on there too. I'm posting a couple other pictures that were taken back in August (there are more on p. 167 of this thread if you want to see them all). I'd say he was about 11 pounds in these. He hasn't changed much since these were taken except his coat has gotten a little longer and thicker for the winter. He weighs almost 13 pounds now. I don't think he'll get much bigger - the vet says no more than 15 pounds. I was originally told his adult weight would be 8 - 10 pounds, which is why I think he's got another breed mixed in. But know matter what, he is still a smoochable little pup to me.

Tess and I have been together 3 yrs now, and she's been my most difficult rescue to bond with yet. They called her a young dog, but I bet she was 5-6-7 when I got her. No clue about her history, but she sports some internal BBs in her backside, but she's not telling tales. She won't play with anything, not interested in pleasing me really, but does like people food which I usually don't do for a dog. She is Stubborn but very smart and charming. She knows: out, walk, poop, pee, her and she always gets her attention, granny's house, go for a ride(and you better mean it!), good, stop, no, wait, come, down, release and the variety of names I call her, Tester mostly.
She has a knack for language tho. When I dine alone, it's usually on the floor between my couch and coffee table watching tv. I was eating one time and she was positioned hopefully at my elbow and was being unusually pesty. I had told her no twice and was sharp about it the last time and she growled at me. I looked down and said "Did you just growl at me?!" She jumped up, went to the window and growled again, then looked back at me like, "Why NO! Clearly, I'm growling at something I saw outside!" Then sheepishly went to her bed and pouted. Sometimes her response to a conversation is uncanny.

I always liked that Frasier episode where the dog is listening and it's like blahblahblah Eddie blahblah food blah blahblahblabh Eddie....cracked me up.

Brooke, Smuggler's training is coming along pretty well. He is pretty much house-trained although occasionally he still may have a poopy accident. He is still hyper and a little hard-headed, but he listens fairly well. We're still struggling with a few things such as getting him not to pull when we walk, jumping on people, and begging for food. He never gets people food, so after nine months you'd think he'd give up. Anybody got any tips on how to break him of any of these - I'm all ears.

My old boss got a rescue named Bailey who was a German Shepard Mix with "intestinal issues". Think what you will. This dog had me at hello!!
He was not two weeks out of the pound when I dog-sat him. It must have been about two in the morning and this poor little mush faced-dog pushed the edge of my mattress with his little nose to tell me " yikes, I gotta go . . . . .and he did. How cool is that dog????
Anyway, the other lesson that I learned from this dog-loving man was that Humans eat first. If you'd like to get your doggie off the human food train -- whether he's been feeding on it or not -- here's the plan . . . YOU EAT FIRST!!! Whatever meal it is -- you eat first. The dog should go to its crate or bed or whatever -- just not where you're having your meal. When you're done, the dog is introduced back into the family mix. There really is a lot to be said for the pack mentality.

Cute story, HH!

A couple of suggestions for lead pulling (sorry no miracle cures, just perseverance!): first, always make sure you leave the house first (i.e. tell him you're in charge of the walk), and second: if he pulls, change direction (or just walk a few steps backwards). Every time. It will drive you totally nuts the first few times you do it, but eventually he will get the idea. With a small dog you could probably just stop, say "heel" or whatever you use and wait for him to come to your side.

You can practice with him on the lead inside just by walking in random directions - the objective is to get him to focus on you with at least part of his brain . They do pick it up eventually.

My last cat also loved playing with paper balls! Cats can be so entertaining, can't they?! I was over at my son's house the other day and he was demonstrating how their cat loved a toy on a string. She (Spook E) would jump 2-3 feet in the air and somersault trying to get it. We had a good laugh at her. :hilarious:

Happy birthday, Smuggler sweetie!

Lou, you have some lovely shots of Maisie there.

Sparky and I entered another agility event on the weekend. One good run (we didn't get disqualified, which is a big step up for us), and the other 2 runs - well, the least said the better!

My trainer let me run his retired dog (Indy) in the last run of the day (an impromptu open event). He thinks Sparky has a lot of the same traits as Indy, which will help us understand the best ways of training him. It was quite a buzz running her - she is FAST - and we got 5th place!

I had to laugh at training last night. There is one piece of equipment my trainer has been telling us to reward our dogs on (loads of little titbits each time they go on it) - so instead of doing what he was supposed to do, Sparky kept going over to it, in hopes of getting more treats. Who is training who here?

Yep. Can't imagine the smell would be great either...

Something I do if my dog or cats aren't eating or have been to the vet and need a bit of a boost: homemade "chicken broth" (the commercial stuff is usually LOADED with salt so don't use that). Just get some bones (the carcass of a cooked chicken you've eaten is fine!), put them in a saucepan with water, bring up to the boil then turn down to lowest heat to simmer for a while. Strain and let them drink the liquid once it has cooled down - can be poured over kibble too. (You could add veges too, but for the pets I don't usually bother).

We have a dog and two cats!!!

Then he put the container on the trampoline, zipped up the netting enclosure and went out.!?

When he got home he was surprised to find the empty container in the middle of the back yard... "someone" - we presume Sparky - pushed the zipper up, climbed on the trampoline, pulled the container down, opened it, and scoffed. Maybe several "someones".

Buddy likes to sit behind me on the back of the couch while I'm on the laptop.

http://i510.photobucket.com/albums/s348/chilca0001/My%20Cats/Picture0003.jpg

I got some bad news when I took Buddy to the vet last week. Buddy is eight years old, and the vet told me that after seven a cat is considered a senior. The vet advised me that when a cat becomes a senior it is a good idea to have blood tests done annually, and I agreed to have it done. The next day the vet called with the results, and while everything else is normal, Buddy has reduced kidney function, which will eventually become kidney failure. It is a slow progressing disease that has no cure, but can be helped by switching his diet (which I have done) and monitoring him to see if he is drinking water excessively and urinating excessively. In a month or so we will check his blood again to see what his numbers are. So far Buddy is showing no symtoms of this disease.

As I have said here before, Buddy is the best cat I have ever had. He is almost dog-like, the way he makes eye contact with me and follows me around. It will be diffficult when I lose him, whether he lives 2 years or 5 years.

Aw, Cathy. I hope Buddy continues to be healthy for a long time yet. You are obviously doing everything right and it's good that he will be monitored quite closely from now on. He is a gorgeous cat and it sounds like you have a wonderful relationship with him. I'm in a similar situation with Maisie (age-wise, and with her FIV) but it's just a case of enjoying the present and trying not to worry too much. Both of them could easily go on for years. I'm glad he has such a good, loving home.

I took my dog Sparky out to the beach today. It has a freshwater stream running out to the sea, & Sparky has always loved running through it, but has never been comfortable with actually swimming - if I threw a stick for him into the deep water he would run across the stream, around obstacles to get back into shallow water & pick the stick up. I have tried and tried to encourage him, but with no success.

Today he finally figured out the whole idea of swimming (hooray!). Then he decided that swimming was just the BEST THING EVER and wouldn't come back to me to go home! I tried to be stern, but he was just having so much fun I wasn't very successful.:hilarious:

Our dog hated the water.

She just liked to bite through hoses cause she thought they were her chew toy. Then JAHH would come out and try to use it to wash the car and water would be shooting out all over with no water pressure to wash the car. I cant tell you how many hoses we replaeced before we figured it out. lol The vet said that to dogs...that material tasted sweet.

GA, The best advice I can give you is to only get one and make sure it isn't pregnant! My kids each won one when they were little, and we said make sure they were 2 females. Well they messed up and gave us a male and a female. Needless to say, we had lots of little hamsters before long. When my son wanted a mouse, we thought we had learned our lesson, so we said only one. Well it ended up being pregnant and then we had baby mice! But have fun!

He seems to sleep most of the day, comimg to 'life' at about 9pm and playing away if the room is dark. He is easy to care for but I'm not sure he is getting enough water. The level on the bottle hasn't moved. If we give him much attention though he retreats into his little house. So we haven't been able to handle him at all really. I'd love to take him out for a little cuddle but the book I bought says you have to introduce yourself really slowly to them.

Thanks for all the advice Willie! You certainly have experience with pets!

Fluffy is adorable. Wise choice- one male! It was always fun to watch them fill up their cheeks with food. You are right to take it slow with him. Try getting him used to just having your hand in his cage at first. Move his bedding around, adding food to his dish, etc. Then you can try just putting your hand there with some treats on it. Ours loved sunflower seeds. Eventually he should eat right out of your hand, and you can start petting him and handling him a bit. The exercise ball is fun to watch. My cats really loved that! We have had all kinds of pets over the years- dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rabbits, turtles, iguanas, anoles, frogs, and a chameleon. They were all fun, and great for kids. My cat Sara passed away on Friday. She was 10 years old. Very unexpected. She was fine Wednesday morning. Wednesday night, she was lethargic and pale. We took her to the vet on Thursday. They kept her and did bloodwork and gave her fluids. They think it was liver disease. She passed away Friday afternoon. At least she didn't suffer for a long time. I'm still kind of in shock. I have other cats, but she was my baby. Whenever I sat down to read or watch TV, she was always on my lap.

They become our babies and members of our family. I"m sorry she went so quick but I am glad she didt suffer very long and apparently she wasnt suffering prior.'
I know how difficult it is. I lost my gal pal, Cookie,(my dog) three years ago and It feels like yesterday (she was a big live from melbourne fan...watched every week with us...real glenn lover.lol) ANd I still remember when our son lost his beloved Tunnels, guinea pig. I didnt know that when they stop eating, its too late, She stopped but I took her to the vet anyway. She died in the vets arms...I balled like a baby and when we buried her ,I balled again.
So, I fell your pain and she was lucky to have you as her momma.
She's waiting for you on the other side of rainbow bridge just like Cookie is waiting for me..I just know it...and we will both feel so good when they lick our faces in greeting wondering what took us so long.

sorry soda...I understand that s how I feel about Cookie.
She had a seisure out front of the house and was dead weight.
A stranger I never saw (swear he was gods angle) was walking by(and we live in a rural area..no sidewalks) . He picked her up and put her in the car telling me her heart was still beating.(My gal would have never let a stranger let alone any one she knew pick her up..she wasnt fighting him. ) I was rushing to the vet calling ahead to let them know we were coming....A block from the vet, she sat up right in the car and I could see her in the rearview mirrow with the look on her face" Hey where am I and how did I get here???". At the vets they came rushing out with a strecher but when I opend the door she jumped down and strolled in to the office like "whats all the fuss about". They checked her 6 ways to sunday and she was fine and very annoyed at the intursive blood work and exam. They couldnt find anything wrong and I took her home. That was thurs. Sat nite, she wouldnt leave my site. JAHH says one of his last memories of her was us both sitting together entwined with each other her kissing my face.
The next morning Iwas sound asleep and Iheard her call out with the same sound before she had the seizure on thurs. I ran down the steps and she was in her fav space on her blanket and whenI saw her I knew something was wrong. I called for JAHH and she died in his arms at home after he told her what a good girl she was and how much we loved her and it was ok to leave us.She died on pearl harbor day at exactly the time pearl harbor was bombed. (weird...two things I never forget.) She was my dog but she loved JAHH unmercefully..he was her guy.....I think she was susposta leave me on that thursday but when she had the seisure all I could say was Oh god please dont let her die in the street. I got my wish and a few extra days with my best gal.
I am so greatful the vet said "she's fine...take her home" instead of her dying there with out us.
I know I need another dog but I havent gotten over her. I miss her.
Ooh shoot now I am crying....I am sorry

Fluffy is getting on well thanks, altough he is still rather shy. He seems to like being in a dark or semi dark room, which as he is nocturnal is expected. I've been following advice about handling him with varying success!

SG, I'm so sorry too about your Sara, and the other losses you have had in your life. Rainbow Bridge is a beautiful reflection, full of hope and love.

Oh my, Smuggler has grown so much! Dreamer, did you expect him to get that big? He's a cutie!

tt and Brooke - I was told Smuggler was a Chorkie - a Chihuahua and Yorkie mix and would be about 8 -10 pounds full grown. He definitely has that mix in him, but I think he has something else too. He has held steady at about 14 1/2 pounds for the last year, so I don't think he'll get much bigger. But, he is, obviously, bigger than what I thought he'd be.

I' pretty sure he has another breed mixed in, but I'm not sure what it is. His coloring, size, and long legs make me think he may be part pinscher. I was talking to eaglesvet about him at one of Glenn's shows in May, and she suggested that I have DNA testing done on him. I haven't done it yet, but I may decide to do it just out of curiousity.

I don't know, I was pretty ticked at Rufus last night as he bolted out the door when we were carrying in Katie's luggage. He loves the run and chase game and will run till we quit following him. He's lucky that our friend on the corner has 2 dogs that started barking when they saw him outside, so he went out and for some reason, Rufus actually walked up to him when he called him.

He knew he was in trouble all night, as he went into a corner of the living room and laid down and looked guilty all night. :hilarious:

I remember seeing pictures of Beyonce & thinking that she looked like Molly, LOL. How old is Beyonce? Molly is 13, as are Lucky & Sam. Katie is 12 & Copper is the baby at 6.

I love black cats too. I read that in England they are considered good luck (is that right, Troub?) & agree with that belief.

Oh my, Molly is older than Beyonce! I'm not really positive about how old she is, but I'm thinking maybe 10. I got her at the shelter and they told me she was about 2. I'm not sure how long I've had her, maybe 7 or 8 years. I'll have to look at her papers from the shelter. My Mom thinks she is much older than that. The past year her undercoat has turned gray. It's kind of weird looking. She looks black, but when you ruffle her hair, it's gray underneath. I've never seen that before on a cat and I've had many over my lifetime. But also, this is the oldest cat I've ever had!

Has anyone ever seen a cat's undercoat turn gray?

Biggie and Boo Boo are just adorable, HH. I'm sure you won't spoil them at all and your sister has nothing to worry about when she's ready to bring them home. I loved the bed picture. Smuggler's nighttime bed is his crate, and I have to carry him to it every night and give him goodnight kisses. If it gets late and I haven't 'tucked him in', he will walk over to it and stand, but he won't go in until I come over. And NO - he's not spoiled either.

And GS, your dad's Boo Boo is very cute, too. I'm sure she is going to miss her mama, but I hope she doesn't grieve too long.

This is priceless!!! I bet they love their Aunt Joanie!!! And I'd be willing to wager a bet that their Mommy is pretty happy you're taking such great care of them. One less thing to worry about while she deals with the other stuff.
