HOTE version. Never been a fan of the original and I did like the jamming at the start and reworked 'Ahh' sections of the new take.

Same question for Heartache Tonight (I think we all know the answer!)

Jonny Come Lately
09-01-2016, 11:14 AM
Definitely the original arrangement for me - HT works best as a high energy old fashioned rock and roll song and it's not as good without the loud electric guitars and Glenn's barnstorming vocal.

(By contrast, I thought the HOTE Witchy Woman was a really interesting reinterpretation of the song. I love the original too, but it was a cool version, it was different rather than distinctly better or worse)

---------------------------------------------------

Cass County Target Bonus Tracks: It Don't Matter To The Sun or Here Come Those Tears Again?

(I probably don't need to say which one I prefer again!)

shunlvswx
09-01-2016, 11:31 AM
Here Comes the Tears Again. I like Don's version. Plus my favorite singer is singing backup on the song with Don and Alison, Vince Gill.

---------
Duets on Cass County CD: Bramble Rose (with Miranda Lambert and Mick Jagger) or That Old Flame(with Martina McBride)

Jonny Come Lately
09-02-2016, 05:05 AM
I like both a lot, although right now I'll go for Bramble Rose. I really like the way Bramble Roses use three different voices for each verse, which wouldn't suit most songs but works there but each verse is from a different point of view.

------------------------------------------------

Good Day In Hell - original studio version or live 1976?

Ive always been a dreamer
09-03-2016, 01:11 PM
Well - I had to do an eny miny miney mo for that one, JCL and it came up with the live version. But, I love 'em both.

==========================

How about Eagles live performances of Joe solo songs: Life's Been Good or Rocky Mountain Way?

Jonny Come Lately
09-05-2016, 05:03 AM
Life's Been Good - it feels like more of a true band song than Rocky Mountain Way does and I think the Eagles performances are better than the studio versions, much more so than with RMW.

---------------------------------------------------

Eagles live performances of Don's solo songs: New York Minute or The Heart Of The Matter?

Freypower
09-05-2016, 06:56 PM
HOTM, which I was lucky enough to see, easily. I don't even know if they played NYM live on the HFO tour, but the HFO performance of it was very disappointing.

--------------------------

Henley covering Leonard Cohen: Democracy or Everybody Knows?

shunlvswx
09-06-2016, 09:45 AM
Definitely Everybody Knows. For some reason, I don't like Leonard Cohen's version.
------
Duets Don did with other people: Trisha Yearwood(Walkaway Joe) or Patty Smyth (Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough)

shunlvswx
09-06-2016, 09:46 AM
HOTM, which I was lucky enough to see, easily. I don't even know if they played NYM live on the HFO tour, but the HFO performance of it was very disappointing.

I think NYM was played live on the HFO era. In HOTE, they have Don singing that song at a stadium with the guys.

ETA: Don sang NYM at Giants Stadium in 1994. I think that's where that clip came from. I haven't seen it anywhere else.

Delilah
09-06-2016, 11:56 AM
"Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough"/Patty Smyth. I don't consider "Walkaway Joe" a duet as Don sings backing vocals and when they performed this on TV back in the day, he stood in the background with dim lighting that brightened only when he sang. Plus the song is not credited as a duet.

--------------------

Glenn's rockin' vocals: Out of Control or Heartache Tonight?

Jonny Come Lately
09-06-2016, 03:35 PM
I love Glenn's vocal on Out Of Control, but I think it has to be Heartache Tonight. He absolutely nailed that one! :singer: Glenn was too modest about his abilities as a rock and roll singer, as HT proves decisively, his voice was easily strong enough to stand out above loud guitars.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Bass parts on The Long Run album: Title track or Those Shoes?

Annoying Twit
09-06-2016, 04:18 PM
Title track. Nothing fancy, but the bass line does exactly what it is supposed to do in terms of supporting the song. It chugs along nicely and has some McCartney style rising lines at the end of the verse. The bass line for Those Shoes isn't bad, but the song needs more in pretty much all areas apart from the talkbox guitars (which for me are the only highlight), and the bass line is one of those areas, I think.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well known song intros: One Of These Nights, or Hotel California?

WS82Classics
09-07-2016, 09:47 AM
HC, but I'd go with the "Eagles Live" electric intro--It provides a decent template for how an all-electric band should play the song.

-------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of EL, of the officially sanctioned live albums(omitting Beacon Theater and Houston), which one is better: "Eagles Live" or "He// Freezes Over"?

Freypower
09-07-2016, 06:39 PM
I barely think of HFO as a live album, mainly because there are so many slow ballads, some studio recordings and because one member is so dominant. I haven't listened to Eagles Live for a long time but at least it sounds like a rock band playing live.

-------------------------

Glenn's R&B influenced solo songs: I Found Somebody or True Love?

RudieCantFail
09-07-2016, 09:57 PM
That's tough for me to pick, since I like both songs a lot. I'd have to go with I Found Somebody. Although I like the "wells" at the beginning of True Love, especially in the GF Live version, I just like I Found Somebody a little bit more as a whole. I like the slower sound of the song. It really is more of a tie for me though.

-------------------------------------------

Reggae-ish sounding Don Henley songs: Little Tin God or The Unclouded Day?

shunlvswx
09-08-2016, 07:30 AM
I'm gonna go with The Uncloudy Day. I love that song from I Can't Stand Still.

--------
Tracks from Glenn's After Hours: After Hours or Here's to Life.

Delilah
09-08-2016, 11:15 AM
After Hours, for sure. It's relaxing and soothing; plus Glenn co-wrote it. I like Glenn's voice and the sentiment in Here's to Life, but that kind of music really isn't my cup of tea.

-------------

Don's singing/drumming combo: Witchy Woman or Hotel California?

Jonny Come Lately
09-08-2016, 03:34 PM
I'll go for Hotel California - for one thing I love the drums in the final verse after he sings 'they just can't kill the beast'. Also, Don does sing most of HC by himself, whereas he has more 'help' in terms of backing vocals from the other Eagles on WW. Having said this, I think the HOTE version of Witchy Woman in particular was a very impressive performance.

Songs with somewhat similar riffs: Certain Kind Of Fool or Indian Summer?

Certain Kinda Fool- Of Course

Witchy Woman Live from 70's or Recorded version?

70's live version

Doolin Dalton Reprise or Wasted Time Reprise

WS82Classics
09-09-2016, 09:45 PM
Both are a bit over-indulgent, but I give "Wasted Time Reprise" the win for musical consistency.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Eagles solo albums with songs featured in the "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" soundtrack: Felder's "Airborne" or Schmit's "Playin' it Cool"?

Delilah
09-10-2016, 03:44 PM
Airborne However, I've only listened to 2 tracks from Playin' It Cool, the title track and "So Much in Love". From what I have heard they're quite different-sounding albums so it's hard to compare. Maybe if I heard all of Timothy's album my answer would be different.

The more intriguing song title: Greeks Don't Want No Freaks or Disco Strangler?

Ive always been a dreamer
09-11-2016, 01:25 PM
Oh this one is easy for me. I really like the rockin' clever Greeks - The Disco Strangler is one of my least favorites.

============================

How about Timothy Expando songs: Parachute or Secular Praise?

Parachute; great track. I like Secular Praise but it isn't really my type of music.

Jerry McGuire or Get Harry

Freypower
09-12-2016, 06:47 PM
Well, neither. But he had a larger part in Let's Get Harry so I guess it's that. His best acting was in TV shows, not in films.

-----------------------

Epic American history songs: The Last Resort or Long Road Out Of Eden?

thelastresort
09-12-2016, 07:51 PM
I have to say The Last Resort, but LROOE runs it very close. The final verse of the latter, specifically from 'Been down the road to Damascus...' is absolutely phenomenal.

-----------

Glenn lead vocal - New Kid in Town or Lyin' Eyes?

shunlvswx
09-12-2016, 07:58 PM
Both songs are great, but I'm gonna go New Kid In Town. This is also my favorite Eagle song sung by Glenn.

Please Come Home For Christmas, or Funky New Year?

Jonny Come Lately
09-14-2016, 08:21 AM
I prefer PCHFC, although I only listen to it in the festive season.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Hell Freezes Over performances: In The City or Life In The Fast Lane?

Freypower
09-14-2016, 06:38 PM
In The City was more lively & Don played drums, whch he never did on that song subsequently, though LITFL is a far superior song.

------------------------------

TBS LROOE tracks: I Don't Want To Hear Any More or Do Somthing?

shunlvswx
09-15-2016, 12:16 AM
I love both songs, but I'm gonna go with Do Something. I love when Don comes in and sings his few lines in the bridge.
------
Don's tracks on LROOE: Waiting in the Weeds or Center of The Universe

Annoying Twit
09-15-2016, 12:48 AM
Both excellent songs. I think the backing vocal on Waiting In The Weeds shades it, though the Spanish guitar (?) solo on Centre of the Universe is also a high point. These are some of the highlights of LROOE for me.

-------------------------------------------------
Joe sung songs on LROOE - Last Good Time In Town or Guilty of the Crime?

Ive always been a dreamer
09-17-2016, 11:48 PM
Well - I'll go with Last Good Time in Town although I like them both.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

City songs: The Eagles' "In the City" or Glenn Frey's "You Belong to the City"?

RudieCantFail
09-18-2016, 01:00 AM
Ooh, this is tough for me. You Belong to the City helped me BS my way through Counseling class essays, but I love In the City, especially when I go out walking in the suburbs with my dog. I'd have to go with In the City, since as of late, I don't listen to You Belong to the City as much anymore. I listened to it on repeat too much to get schoolwork done. Yep, In the City is my pick b/c I can't get tired of it. I like both versions of it from The Warriors and the Eagles.

------------------------------
6 and 1/2 minute Eagles songs: King of Hollywood or Hotel California?

Motel California
09-18-2016, 01:46 AM
Hotel California. I love the twelve string in that song.

Hotel California. I love the twelve string in that song.

------------------------------------------------------------

Wasted Time (Reprise) or Doolin' Dalton/Desperado (Reprise)?

Wasted Time (Reprise). I like the strings, and the track made a good start to side 2 of the LP. It doesn't work quite so well on the CD, but I remember the LP.

For some reason I don't like the Desperado reprise so much. I prefer the arrangement on the main tracks, and the reprise sounds a bit half-baked to me. With Wasted time, the reprise is so different from the original that it doesn't compete in any way, in my mind.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Bass player signature tracks: Take It To the Limit or I Can't Tell You Why?

thelastresort
09-18-2016, 08:36 AM
Take It to the Limit. I love ICTYW but TITTL was the first Eagles song I ever heard, and fell in love with, plus it's more noteworthy for the Randy's contribution, whereas I feel ICTYW is dominated by the guitar solos.

Annoying Twit
09-18-2016, 04:56 PM
With songs it's often the first version I hear that sounds 'right' to me and which I prefer. As that would predict, my answer is the "So What" version is my favourite. If I'd heard the songs in the other order, perhaps my opinion would be different.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe Walsh 'Theme From' songs: Theme From Boat Weirdos, or Theme From Island Weirdos?

Jonny Come Lately
09-21-2016, 03:14 AM
Theme From Boat Weirdos - I have to go for this one as I've actually not heard Island Weirdos, but I love Boat Weirdos which I think is an excellent instrumental and one of the best tracks on BSF.

RudieCantFail

I just listened to both on Spotify, and to be clear, I'm not a Tim fan but these albums are very soothing to listen to. I'm neutral to Tim, but now, I think he's underappreciated/underrated in the general public compared to the rest of the guys. My opinion won't be as good as the Tim fans on this board, but I'll just give a first impression. I prefer Expando over Leap of Faith, but they're both good and even. I can't name a song that I would skip so readily in these two Tim albums. As a Henley fan, there are some songs that I would skip in some of his work, i.e. BTPB, Man with a Mission, Shangri-La, so yeah, Henley has unevenness in his work. Although I'm a sucker for songs that have hints of reggae, Slow Down and You're So Wild from LoF don't win me over enough to give the album the edge. I appreciate that Tim has different styles on LoF, whereas Expando has mostly the same vibe throughout. I didn't mind White Boy from Sacramento, even though it's a weak spot in Expando for me. To wrap it up, I like the overall acoustic sound of Expando and it left a great first impression on me. It made me want to listen to Leap of Faith right after that, and although it tried with the varying styles, I just like Expando more. I starred "Friday Night" for my Spotify favorites.

--------------------------------------
Odd Henley performances from the Inside Job era: Spanish-sounding Hotel California from Inside Job Live or Life in the Fast Lane from Vh1 Storytellers?

Link to LITFL (Credit goes to L&M Eagles Fastlane. If it's not a good idea to share a link to a video from their website, let me know, and I'll just describe what happens): https://s.real.com/orC4WX

You could either answer this one or answer AT's question on Expando or Leap of Faith again. Or both, if you feel like it. I don't know. I'm just thinking that AT may want to hear from a big Tim fan or someone who likes Tim more than just a neutral person.

Delilah

Thanks, RudieCantFail, for those links; definitely different-sounding! Between the two, I'll go with Life in the Fast Lane. While I'm not a big fan of rap, Don looks like he's having fun with it. The HC arrangement (which I would describe as Mexican, not Spanish; Don not only plays the maracas, he also lets out a couple of gritos), loses that eerie, mysterious vibe of the original.
