You know, since this Survivor started I've been thinking how much I love this album. It gets a lot of flak sometimes for having more "filler" than other albums but, man there really is some KILLER songs on this record that more than make up for it. I think it's quite underrated. I really love the album front to back and I still don't skip anything. I can't say the same for some of their other albums.
I think it was a painful process as DH and GF have said and they were struggling to work together, but they still managed to put out a great album. Maybe not as great as Hotel California (album), but a good one that I think shouldn't feel embarrassed for existing. I personally love the sound of this album and I think the writing of the well loved songs holds up to their other classics.

My feelings on The Long Run album have changed from moderate contempt to general indifference, the only two songs I adore on it are Heartache Tonight and the absolutely superb Sad Cafe, the other eight vary from decent to godawful and I could happily skip on my iPod.

I strongly agree with this, especially about the killer songs on the album. I feel there are not so many single albums in rock which boast 7 really strong songs that a record like TLR can be dismissed for having one or two weaker tracks, and I think it has almost as many great tracks as Hotel California, which is impressive. When I listened to the album in full prior to playing this I ranked the songs in order of preference based on how I felt that day in order to help me decided on how I wanted the game to go - I'll post this list once we've played the final.
The funny thing is that it was once my least favourite album, and at one point there was really only one song I loved and two or three others I liked. Now I love virtually all of it.

I love this album, but then I love all Eagles albums. Although, it’s not my favorite album, it, along with Desperado, are the ones that grew on me the most.
Now, as far as voting, speaking for myself, I don’t base my votes in these games on who sings lead on the songs. In most cases (except when I’m voting strategically), I vote on what I believe to be the best song. The criteria I use to make my decision is not always even my favorite song, but rather how I rate the songs’ music, lyrics, vocals, melody, harmonies, and arrangement. In the case of these three remaining songs, it’s very difficult to differentiate because they are all excellent songs in their own way. So my bias for rockers wins out here. Plus, in both of the previous games I Can’t Tell You Why was in the last round, so I’m glad that it appears The Long Run will make it this time around. So …
I cast my vote for I Can't Tell You Why.

The next song to be eliminated in The Long Run Survivor is I Can’t Tell You Why. “I Can’t Tell You Why”, the tribe has spoken and this was harder than it had to be. Now you must try to walk away – don’t turn around because you want to stay. We don’t have to tell you why you must leave the island immediately. The final two songs can step forward for the final round.

Man, I'm torn....
I love Heartache Tonight, it's a great rocker. I love Joe's slide and the lyrics.
I love The Long Run, I love the lyrics, I love the dual slide guitar, and I love the fact it was their theme song. I really identify with some of the lyrics.
Part of me wants to vote for Heartache Tonight, as it is a fantastic song and I love Glenn's vocal on this.
Part of me wants to vote for The Long Run, I love the lyrics and I love the "groove" on this that is a great blend of rock and rnb.
I'll sit on it for a little while and vote later tonight.
I'm VERY happy though with the two remaining songs as they are the ones I was hoping for.

It has survived pretty well in the last few rounds. I'm sorry that I tried throwing this song under the bus for King of Hollywood, but hey, it's like an ultimate survivor. It has gone through the more difficult journey, whereas Heartache Tonight was in little to no danger of elimination.

Well, for me, this is an easy choice because I consider Heartache Tonight to be the standout track on a great album. The song just exudes energy – the music, the vocals, and the lyrics. I mean the guitars, the drums, the vocals are so contagious that you just can’t help singing, dancing, and clapping all the way through. The song won a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus and very deservedly so. This song is simply AWESOME and I cast my vote for ...

Ok, judge. The jury has reached a decision.
And I vote for:
Heartache Tonight for the win!
I don't want to diminish The Long Run. In fact I feel bad for not picking it. I feel it's a far better song than some give it credit for and it's my second favorite on the album if not tied, but I have to pick something, so HT it is. I think The Long Run sums up the Eagles and DH/GF relationship from that time and beyond and I think it shouldn't be looked down upon just because it takes influence from "Tryin' To Live My Life Without You". It's not an exact copy, and I feel that personally, it's not valid enough of a reason for me to not like it, at least IMO. I feel it has really stood the test of time well and is a top 3 track on the album.
Now, why Heartache Tonight when I've campaigned so hard for the title track above and before now? Well...
I just prefer the harder edged sound and Glenn's gritty vocal and the fact that it really is my favorite Glenn vocal outside of AG and TIE. It just has that sound that maybe he isn't as known for compared to the smoother voice but is great. I think it has a very raw sound. Then there is the guitars. Joe's slide solo is fantastic and I think it really adds a lot to it. I was not happy with the HOTE version of it, but it was still good.
It was the hardest decision for me in all of the Survivors I've done honestly as I'm so passionate about both songs. But I feel I've made the right choice.

The Long Run for the win !!
HT is definitely not my favourite song and I don't particularly like the vocals on it though I do like the HOTE version of it - I seem to be in the minority here on this though .....
TLR to me is a great Eagles song and I love how they sing it live - I think it's one of the standout songs on the album and is a worthy survivor finalist !

I vote Heartache Tonight for the win.
I only got as far as a rough ranking of the songs and the way the game played out, I never had a tough decision. The hardest was whether to pick The Long Run or In the City to try to save King of Hollywood.
As for strategy, in the first three rounds, I looked ahead. I knew that DS was going without my help and I could be sure that the other two weak tracks would follow, so I did what I could to protect King of Hollywood.

Okay, judging by the comments here I think this wasn't as easy for me as it was for some of you. I love both of these songs, and they were both in my top 5 when I ranked the tracks from the album. So it's a close call, but...
I vote for Heartache Tonight for the win!
As others have said, this song rocks! I love the mix of guitar styles with Don F's rock and roll chords together with Joe's terrific slide work, especially on the solos, and then of course it has Glenn's fantastic lead vocal. The lyrics admittedly are not as poetic as The Sad Café, and unlike King Of Hollywood it doesn't have a story to tell, but as Glenn said, they weren't meant to be deep. It doesn't pretend to match the lyrical scope of the Hotel California era singles, it's great in its own right. I think the main objective of the song was to be a great rock and roll shuffle, and they totally succeeded in that - IMO it was the most fun song they'd done since On The Border era.
In a way though, I think the song tells you quite a bit about the band's state of mind. Glenn's vocal and Joe's slide work in particular seem to capture the pent-up frustration that the guys must have been feeling during the protracted recording sessions, and lines like 'somebody's gonna hurt someone...' foreshadow the events of Long Night at Wrong Beach. Also, the sense of desperation of the people around them at that time is very much present. Although the song is immense fun, there's still a sense of menace, and I think that puts it up an extra notch, especially in the context of the album.
The Long Run is a worthy runner up though - as I said earlier, I really like the lyrics, the guitars, the groove... it's just an all round strong song I feel.

Congratulations to Heartache Tonight! A worthy winner of the survivor IMO.
Before playing the game, when I was listening to the album I decided to make a list of the songs in my personal order of preference from best to worst, to help me decide which songs to vote for. I've posted my list below. I must admit I'd be surprised if anyone has the exactly the same list of me, although happy to be proven wrong. Maybe I'm just crazy!
1. The Sad Café
2. Those Shoes
3. Heartache Tonight
4. The Long Run
5. King Of Hollywood
6. I Can't Tell You Why
7. In The City
8. Teenage Jail
9. The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks
10. The Disco Strangler
I'm pleased that Heartache Tonight won because it's my favourite of the hits from the album. I was also very happy that The Sad Café made it to the last four, which was better than I was expecting, so in terms of my top three the only shame for me was that Those Shoes went relatively early. I'd have possibly changed my vote then if I'd known it was at such risk of going out. If I was to split my list into categories depending on how I feel about each of the songs then:
Songs 1-3 - Fantastic songs, among the best by the Eagles
Songs 4-7 - Excellent songs, very strong additions to the album
Song 8 - My honest opinion? It's a good song, not as good as the ones above it, but better than the last two
Songs 9-10 - Weaker songs (although Greeks is a bit better than TDS)
To be honest, there's next to nothing between the songs in fourth place and seventh, and not an awful lot between first and seventh either. It's my fourth favourite album overall. I think the quality of the album is more consistently high than the Eagles LP, One Of These Nights and LROOE, and it is less dependent on the hit songs than those first two, as good as the singles on TLR are. I think the vast majority of this album is really very good indeed, and the couple of weaker tracks don't drag it down much if at all, however they do mean it ranks behind On The Border for me (as that album doesn't have any weak tracks IMO) as well as Hotel California and Desperado.

For me at least, The Long Run is just the pinnacle of why that era was so torturous for them. It lacks the usual high standard of lyrics on a Don H. vocal; the guitar work, whilst I do like the typical Glenn rhythm guitar tab, is not that remarkable compared to what Walsh and Felder managed in other songs on HC / TLR (I am aware Felder didn't play any guitars on the studio version, making it unique amongst their discography). Indeed the only person who I would consider it a band highlight for would be TBS and his bass work. It just strikes me as them saying '**** it, we've given up, let's just make something out of this'. For the amount of talent the five had between them, it's just rather lacking.
The Sad Cafe on the other hand I consider one of their finest works. It's probably after The Last Resort Don's finest lyrical work of the Seventies, Felder's solo is exceptional (I believe it's his second favourite Eagles achievement after HC?) and David's Sanborn's sax is just on a different level, it all comes together so well. I just love how Don H. (and I'm presuming a bit of Glenn too) essentially tears apart everything they'd spent the last decade of their lives trying to fulfill, all of hedonism and eagerness of Take It Easy being dismissed and disregarded (let's be honest, 'thought we could change this world with words like love and freedom' essentially encases all of the late Sixties hippy, Southern California carry on that so many people laid their faith in, the Eagles included). It also for me gains more meaning when you realise that for over a decade people thought this song was the last act, the final stand of one of the biggest bands rock ever produced, one that was the embodiment of one of America's greatest cultural and social movements and it just tore the whole thing apart.
It also made it onto Eagles Live concerts for Sen. Cranston (edit - not the disk, thanks soda!), so I think we can safely say that they did play it! It appeared to be somewhat of a staple all things considered, probably aided by the fact that they had to hire David Sanborn for the tour to play it.

"The Sad Cafe" isn't on Eagles Live.
CORRECTION TO MY EARLIER POST WHERE I ERRONEOUSLY STATED I ONLY KNEW OF THEM PLAYING IT AT THE CRANSTON BENEFITS: After I posted that, I looked at some of my Long Run-era concert recordings just in case. While it doesn't appear to have been played on the first leg of the tour, it was indeed part of the setlist in 1980. My apologies. Once again, my memory has failed me, even though I wrote all these down myself years ago.
thelastresort
10-14-2016, 12:18 PM
Sorry, it was played at the Cranston benefits, but didn't make the cut for Eagles Live; however, on the (bootleg?) audio that exists for the concert you can clearly hear Glenn acknowledge 'David Sanborn on alto' after the song is over. On a second check it doesn't appear to be a staple per se, but does seem to get a decent run on the last leg of the tour (http://www.setlist.fm/stats/eagles-6bd6bede.html) (I grant that website isn't the best source, but it's normally there or thereabouts), so I suppose David Sanborn could have toured with them briefly, which would make more sense being the prolific musician he was back then. Even if all of the above I've typed is BS, the fact that Glenn chose the revive it for the final few shows seems to me to indicate that he did feel something for it. Then again, I suppose it could also have been a bit of a deliberate choice like I think ATTIG was.

Can't help but razz you a bit! How old are you, anyway? (And I know you're a good deal younger than me! Actually, about my own daughter's age!)
Hehe, moving on.....I need to listen to TSC again! I heard it in the car a couple days ago and the guitar work struck me.

I know David Sanborn plays on the bootleg recorded in March 1980 in LA, but for the Cranston event, it was Phil Kenzie.

I've done a bit of number crunching based on the eight song rankings (including my own list) that have been posted so far, and the results are:
1. Heartache Tonight - 68 (3 top places)
2. I Can't Tell You Why - 61 (1 top place)
3. Those Shoes - 58 (1 top place)
4. The Sad Cafe - 53 (2 top place)
5. The Long Run - 53 (1 top place)
6. In The City - 49
7. King Of Hollywood - 43
8. Teenage Jail - 23
9. The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks - 20
10. The Disco Strangler - 12
I've calculated these points totals using a points scoring system - with 10 songs on the album it is relatively straightforward, with the song being ranked in first place received ten points, and as you go down the list each song receives one point less than the one ranked above. I'll illustrate this numerically for clarity:
1st place - 10 points
2nd place - 9 points
3rd place - 8 points
etc.
Down to 1 point for 10th place.
Doing this exercise suggests that the Survivor game produced the correct winner and the correct last placed song, as Heartache Tonight has the most votes and The Disco Strangler the least. The Sad Café and The Long Run have the same number of points, but the former is ahead because two posters (myself and tlr) put it top of their lists, whereas only AT put the latter top.

Congrats to Heartache Tonight!!!
What an awesome song. And also to The Long Run for being a worthy runner up. I thought this was an interesting game and pretty much agree with the results, although, like several others, I think Those Shoes went down too early.
Here is my list that has remained virtually unchanged since the first time I heard the album. But, as I mentioned earlier, overall, this album has grown on me more than most of the others. The more I hear it, the more I appreciate it.
1. Heartache Tonight
2. The Long Run
3. I Can’t Tell You Why
4. The Sad Cafe
5. Those Shoes
6. King of Hollywood
7. In the City
8. The Greeks Don’t Want No Freaks
9. Teenage Jail
10. The Disco Strangler

Jonny - I must have been typing my last post at the same time you were posting.
Anyway, we did a similar exercise in The Long Run Celebration thread a few years back. If anyone is interested in comparing the results, it is Post 88 in this link ...

I'm with you AT. It and Heartache Tonight are true rockers and appeal to me way more than the mellower numbers like The Sad Cafe. Good to know it was played live (although only seemingly on the latter half of TLR tour) but I don't think it was a big hit. I've never heard it on the radio. The lyrics are deeper on TSC but I'm more into the music and guitars and rocking vibe of the song and TLR has killer guitars and groove as does HT.

Thanks for the link! I think I counted 16 different lists there, so the numbers are a fair bit bigger, although the comparison is still very valid and interesting.
I'll give the current tallies, now modified to include your list. The only change is that The Long Run is now outright fourth, two points ahead of The Sad Café (and only two behind Those Shoes).
1. Heartache Tonight - 78 (4 top places)
2. I Can't Tell You Why - 69 (1 top place)
3. Those Shoes - 64 (1 top place)
4. The Long Run - 62 (1 top place)
5. The Sad Cafe - 60 (2 top place)
6. In The City - 53
7. King Of Hollywood - 48
8. Teenage Jail - 25
9. The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks - 23
10. The Disco Strangler - 13
I notice that the earlier list has the same top two in the same order (Heartache top, and ICTYW second), and The Disco Strangler bottom as well, but elsewhere there are some differences. Not dramatic changes for the most part - the main change is that Teenage Jail seems to be more popular with Borderers now than it was back then. Back then, it got just one more point than TDS and was well below Greeks, which was out on its own - far behind KOH but also with nearly twice as many points as the bottom two. By contrast, with this poll Jail is actually ahead of Greeks, and TDS is clearly the least popular song so far. I also see that Those Shoes and The Long Run have swapped places (although there's very little between them in either case), as have The Sad Café and In The City. Of course, this could change if anyone else posts their list!

Yep - This seems to be fairly typical in these games. The first few favorite and least favorite songs are usually predicable; however, the order of everything in between can vary a lot more.
