If a song is going to be on a "best" list... I think I should have at least heard of it!

The ones I have heard of pretty much grate on me... if I hear, "under my umbrella, ella, ella, ella, ella"... one more time... UGH! And the Kelly Clarkson song sounds like she's yelling the whole time!

I appreciate that artists like The Strokes and Green Day have a place on the list... but I wouldn't even say those are their "best" songs!

Intelligent lyrics seem to have gone out of fashion.

Gnarls Barkley's Crazy IS good, and the lyrics at least make some sense... but oh my, some of those songs are just .

Does Rolling Stone really still carry a grudge against the Eagles? STILL??? Or do they just feel a need to show they're still relevant by glorifying today's music at the expense of songs which have stood the test of time?

I think that's probably more like it. They're just trying to move on with the times. I know that when I bought my Eagles t-shirt at Walmart that came with the one year free RS subscription, I didn't know (or care) about half of the artists in the magazine.

I think so too. They are just trying to stay current.

It's got to be a pretty uninteresting job at RS if you're a lover of the good ol' days of classic rock bands.

I agree with most of you all about this. I appreciate that RS wants to keep up with the current times and think that they should do that. However, having said that, I still believe that they have selected a bunch of crap (although I have to admit that I haven't even heard some of it). If you want to represent current music, then surely they can find something better. If not, then perhaps, the current stuff shouldn't be represented so heavily on their list. I also believe there is something to be said for music standing the test of time - so that should be a factor.

Unfortunately, I don't think RS will ever give the Eagles what I believe is their proper due.

I thought the last Eagles cover story wasn't bad, to be fair, although a lot of it just rehashed the writer's previous cover story with them.

But I subscribe to RS now & I am amazed how often they stick the really in depth stories deep inside the magazine & put a bit of teenage fluff or 'populist' appeal on the cover. The most recent issue I received had an in depth interview with Paul Simon which was one of the best stories I've read. They also interviewed Steven Tyler & he was the one who made the cover.

They've put Lady Gaga on the cover at least four times in the last few months whereas in their entire career the Eagles only made the cover three times. I should say that they showed a similar neglect of Led Zeppelin. U2 & Bruce Springsteen, however, only have to breathe & they make the cover.

I've taken this off topic now, sorry.

They are indeed desperately trying to appeal to the younger market they at one time dominated by including all these recent hits/acts in their list. I get it, but I think it's a lame sell-out. I also think they underestimate the young generation. There's a lot of teens and twenty-somethings who understand the quality of the Eagles music.

There IS some very good current stuff out there though that didn't make the list. I would have put CeeLo Green/Bruno Mars/Adele ahead of "Umbrella" which just drives me NUTS with its repetitiveness and lack of musicality.

I agree EK - there is some much better stuff they could have chosen over some of the stuff that made their list. That's why I dislike these kind of lists so much. While I realize you can't please everyone, it seems that most of the time, they don't even get close to getting it right.

Good point. I guess they were trying to include lots of "urban" music.

At least "Hotel California" is still on there.
