I have to admit this, as much as I hate to (about the tearing up part). :hilarious:

While watching one of the LBG clips, I teared up watching Joe really into it and having fun.

Thinking about how happy I am that he is sober and healthy and happy. He really looks amazing and is truly playing better every day, which is amazing because he was always a great guitarist. I look at the photos and videos in the 90s and it makes me sad, even the ones where he is playing good... HFO was when he was starting to come around but some of those solo late 80s/early 90s pictures make me so sad to think we might have lost him. I'm so glad Joe got sober and I hope that one of these years I might actually meet him and tell him how much his music means to me. He's such a nice person I think and IMO the funniest rockstar out there. He really comes across as having no ego and an Ordinary Average Guy, as the song says.

From a different version of the same clip on youtube:

In order of appearance:
Slash
Rick Nielsen - Cheap Trick
Dusty Hill - ZZ Top
Matthew Sweet
Joey Ramone
Lisa Loeb
Dave Mustaine - Megadeth
Roy Clark
Jonny Lang
Michael Stanley
Joe Walsh - The Eagles

Soda was at the taping, so maybe she knows, but surely they rehearsed their parts somewhat beforehand..??..

I love to see Joe playing with his glass bottle slide! I wonder if it's the one Duane Allman gave him.

It appeared to me at the taping that there has been only minimal rehearsal, if any. Several times the "friends" botched lyrics and the songs had to be re-done... this in spite of the fact that they had a teleprompter!

GL posted the audio version of this video of Joe on The Howard Stern Show over in the documentary thread, when we were discussing Joe's speaking voice, and I listened to it for the first time today and wanted to comment on it, so I decided to bring it over here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjd8zdACAJI

A couple of things caught my ear in this interview; first, that Joe has Attention Deficit Disorder. I don't think I knew that. I'm not familiar with all of the effects of ADD, but perhaps that explains some of the fidgeting and rocking back and forth.

The other thing I picked up on was when Joe was talking about his marriage and his extended family. I know there were some here who didn't like the song, Family off of AM because it sounded like he was dissing his kids. I never felt that way about the song, but I thought Joe described very well how he feels now being a part of that family, and I thought it went a long way to explain what he meant in the song.

Last night I noticed that Joe was wearing the same outfit in The Confessor video that he wore on the Midnight Special in 1973!

Take a look:

Rocky Mountain Way Midnight Special:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quVERH404pA&feature=share&list=PLHyYOKpAP24RbU5QVKTJVnmoR6i0pr-0k

It looks like a matador outfit! I'm happy the outfit is showing in both "photos" above! I wonder if Joe's kept his old stage clothes? If so some of those pieces should be in the Rock n' Roll Hall of fame!

One of the things that perplexes me about the HOTE documentary is that they refer to Joe's Unplugged as the low point in his career. I don't think they name the show, just show a clip. I think the show is good. I've seen Joe look worse and I've seen him play/sing far worse then this. I'm not crazy about the choice of songs but I still enjoy watching this.

I agree that he sounds good in that clip they show. I like the way he sings. There certainly wasn't any footage of him sounding bad or not performing up to par while on stage. The way he looks in that one interview is really bad and scary, though. I would think that was his low point, whenever that was.

Midnight Visitor

To me he looks the worst in that Travis Tritt video. Derelict Joe. His vocals suffered way more from the alcohol then his playing ever did. He could always play. Blind drunk, still a killer guitarist. However, he'd scream his vocals instead of sing them. Interviews. In the end of his drinking days those were the worst. The clip where he asks Arsenio if he stole his hubcaps. I want to crawl under a desk when he says that. Or the dirty joke he tells at some radio thing in a mall with Michael Stanley. Ugh! It's crazy how much more acceptable his drunken behavior was just 20 years ago. I think if that had been today all kinds of people would be trying to get him into rehab. I remember at the time, the attitude, including mine, was, "oh that's just Joe." Pretty sad actually.

shunlvswx
03-24-2014, 12:36 PM
Thank goodness he's not like that today and we still have him today. Its amazing that Joe didn't relapse(that I know of) and stay sober for 20 years. I just hate that people still think he's still drinking and doing drugs when they watch current videos of him sober.

He wasn't too bad in that video. I've seen a video on Youtube where he was teaching the host how to tune a guitar and how to play slide guitar. It was called something like "The Reason Why Joe is a bad guitar instructor" or something like that. People on YouTube talked about him bad even though they were praising his guitar playing.

Midnight Visitor

Yeah Shun, I was going to mention how horribly drunk he is for his instructional video. Technically I don't think there's supposed to be anyone sitting next to him. I just think he was so unbelievably drunk that they needed someone to sit there and guide him thru what he was supposed to be doing. That was a video that came out in the early 90's. There were a few of them by different artists. I saw a few that didn't have the guy sitting next to the artist.

I'm so proud of Joe for beating the odds. To be a Keith Moon/Jim Morrison/John Belushi type character that gets to live to tell about it. I'd give anything for a Joe Walsh documentary similar to HOTE.

My biggest pet peeve is that a lot of people still think Joe is partying. If he thinks about what he says and speaks slow people also often think he's either still drunk or brain damaged from the drugs. :-(

03-25-2014, 01:28 AM
Maybe they couldn't find the footage that really shows Joe at his worst. I have some audience bootleg footage from the early 90s which I can't even watch because he's so awful in them. Forgetting lyrics, unable to hit notes, looking ghastly, seeming absolutely lost... thank God he got out of that.

I agree that using the "Cinnamon Girl" clip while talking about Joe being in bad shape didn't really work. The uniformed fan would be like "Well, he doesn't seem that bad off to me." The beer-soaked interview conveyed it a bit better, but that was nowhere near his low.

Soda. I was reading that article you posted yesterday. When it was talking about the guys were thinking about getting back together in 1990, and they didn't want Joe because of the state he was in and of course from what I read Don wasn't in good terms with Joe at that moment. Its amazing they did change their minds because we don't know where Joe would be today if they didn't let him come back to the group. I'm still surprise that Glenn tour with him for the Party of 2 Tour before the 1994 tour.

Did Joe ever relapse during the early years or he's one of those guys who truly stayed sober and only went to rehab once.

Midnight Visitor
03-25-2014, 10:37 AM
I always wonder about the fact that Glenn went out w/Joe not too long before he sobered up. Did he think Joe should sober up then?

There has never really been a point in which we knew that Joe had to go back to rehab. However, there is 2012 interview with Howard Stern in which he talks about the fact that he made the mistake of getting married right around the time he got sober. What he says is something to the point of being with her challenged his sobriety. What does that mean? I don't really know.

sodascouts
03-28-2014, 11:31 PM
I remember once he gave an interview where he said he took his last drink in 1995, but I can't remember where I saw it. I assumed he might have relapsed and taken a drink after finishing a leg of HFO because he was "allowed" to, then realized he no longer needed it. That would line up with the marriage timeline.

With the Party of Two - Glenn said in the doc that Joe was telling everybody he was ok, that there would be no problem, but that they could see there was a problem. Maybe Joe's inability to perform well on the Party of Two tour was what made it crystal clear to Glenn that no matter what Joe said, he was definitely not going to be able to do HFO unless he was sober.

I was thinking to myself that Joe could had easily relapse at the end of his fourth marriage(or is Marjorie his fourth marriage), but he didn't. Thank goodness. I still think Marjorie was the person he was looking for so many years. The one that changed him and made him a more better person and she also goes on tour with Joe. Every where you look, she's there with him which is cool. They look like such a cute couple and Joe seems so happy now that he found that person he probably was looking for for years.

I just watched last night's Ham Nation show. I did not understand  half of what they were talking about but loved their passion & knowledge! Joe's a total geek. He built his first home studio in CO in '71 or '72. It didn't work!! Joe Vitale tells a great story about it in his book. In the last year or two Joe did a bunch of great videos for Gibson in which he gives you all kinds of geeky hints as to how to fine tune your guitar to get the best sounds from it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKTXTWbI4FU

I know that he's built model airplanes/helicopters/rockets. I think he's even a blacksmith! I recall that being a new hobby of his in the '80's.

Have you ever read the bio he wrote to promote the Confessor album? This still cracks me up:

JOE WALSH
I was born on November 20, 1947, in a place called Wichita, Kansas. I was 0 years old. Wichita is almost exactly in the middle of the continental United States, if you ignore Alaska and Hawaii. Most folks in Kansas do. Wichita is also famous for being called “The Airplane Capital,” which it is, but I’m not sure how important this is outside Kansas. I’m sure it’s not a priority in Alaska or Hawaii. Kansas is also where Dorothy and Toto lived once. To the best of my knowledge, I was not born in New York, and whoever started that rumor is full of beans.

Places I have lived:
1. Wichita, Kansas
2. Evanston, Illinois
3. Columbus, Ohio
4. Flushing, Long Island, New York (Queens)
5. Montclair, New Jersey
6. Kent, Ohio
7. Ipswich, Massachusetts
9. Nederland, Colorado
10. Boulder, Colorado
11. Los Angeles, California
12. In Irving Azoff’s car
14. Santa Barbara, California
15. Coconut Grove, Florida
16. Ringo’s house
17. Nowhere
19. Los Angeles, California, where I currently live as far as I can tell.

Things I have done:
– Produced albums for Dan Fogelberg and Ringo.
– Ran for President of the United States.
– Played on everybody’s albums.
– Flown in the Concorde.
– Met Robert Mitchum.

Brief summary of my careers:
1. Member of the James Gang (“Funk #49,” “Walk-Away”).
1. Ex-member of the James Gang.
2. Leader and founding member of Barnstorm (“Rocky Mt. Way”).
2. Only member of Barnstorm.
3. Brief but glorious solo career, So What, You Can’t Argue With A Sick Mind, ending with much public head-scratching because of career #4.
4. Member of The Eagles Hotel California (1977), Long Run (1979), during which also made 1 solo album, But Seriously Folks.
5. Right around in here somewhere is my present career — In a couple of years, I’ll be able to tell you how I did.

Things that might be interesting to know about me:
– I attended Kent State University regularly over a 6-year period without graduation.
– One time I crashed in a Boeing 727.
– Yes, on occasion I do saw up hotel rooms with chain saws and throw the pieces out the window. Why not?
– I have absolutely no idea whether I have a Maserati or not … probably. It would seem logical.
– No, I do not need a new nose.
– I prefer B.B. King to Don Ho.

Things that people like to ask:
– What does “The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get” mean?
– “Where are you from?” (I’m from Ohio, I don’t know why.)
– “Hey Joe, what ever happened to the guys in the James Gang?”
– “Hey Joe, I love that song of yours — how does it go?”

My hobbies include such activities as:
Amateur radio (since 1962), blacksmithing (honest). Arguing all night about politics, (or, for that matter — anything.) Hooking stuff up to see if it works, and beer.

What my new album, The Confessor is about:
My new album, The Confessor, is about 20 minutes a side.

I agree Shun...a lot of the solo videos from the 80s and early 90s are unwatchable for me. It reminds me of how bad he was and the thought we might have lost him like so many other rock n' rollers.

I agree. He looked great in all his 80's videos and looks very much how he looks today in the Ordinary Average Guy video. I think stylists and make-up were probably at play for the OAG video tho. It really wasn't until '93 that he looks derelict. Too skinny, un-shaven, unclean looking. He looked like a homeless person in the Travis Tritt video. I know he went to rehab very quickly after that. Thank God!!

The HFO clips are a bit difficult to watch. I know he's sober here but looks like he's terrified. Just didn't quite look like himself yet. He's had such an incredible turn around in the 2000's!! They've been very, very good to him. Amen!

I also think the 'mall' video was his rock bottom of everything I've seen. I've said it before, but, cosmetic help or not, he appears to be healthier, happier, and in a better place than at anytime during his entire adult life. You go, Joe!!!

Even in the 90s, it seems that Joe had good and bad days, depending on how long since he'd slept, eaten, showered and changed his clothes. Which may explain why he looks ok in some photos. My mind his slightly boggled at the thought of the "Party of Two" tour with a dishevelled Joe and an overly slick Glenn.

Thanks F50. I'm going to also post this link in the respective album threads. I think YouTube is now paying royalties for these albums so artists and record companies will now make them available. Seems like a fair compromise to me, although I'm not sure if YouTube is paying as much as the record companies would like.

You are spot on. My feeling is, if you're going to bring Vitale and an additional drummer, he should be used to his full potential. Kettle drums, flute, the whole package. I'm going to have to ask JV if he still plays flute. Since I haven't actually heard any flute from him since the 70's perhaps he's not playing it any more.

I've just checked the sleeve notes for Vitale's last CD, Speaking In Drums from 2008. All the track credits have "Joe Vitale : All Other Instruments and Vocals" so Joe may have played the flute on it but I can't remember off the top of my head. I don't think he did.
It's a good excuse to give it another listen.

And The Band Played On would be something to see, if Vitale plays Sitar on it, like he does on the Analog Man album.

A few decades ago (80s), I switched on the TV, flicked through the 4 channels we had at the time and caught the unmistakable voice of Jackson Browne.
I guessed that the song was called Crow On The Cradle. More than likely, it was David Lindley on violin then I caught as hint of Joe Walsh in the harmonies!

As a Joe Walsh record collector, this was stunning discovery!

Sure enough, the credits read:

Crow On The Cradle

Jackson Browne
David Lindley
Graham Nash
Craig Doerge
Joe Walsh

Written by
Sidney Carter

I watched the entire film to catch more of the song. It was an obscurity titled IN THE KING OF PRUSSIA. It starred Martin Sheen. I think he was the only professional actor in the film and to be honest, it was the most tedious thing I'd ever watched, recreating the trial of the Plowshares 8.

I searched for the song. Jackson has a few versions of Crow On The Cradle but the only version featuring Joe Walsh, is in the In The King Of Prussia film.

Today, after the umpteenth search, over many years, on YouTube, I finally found it and listened to the track for a second time and this time I got to hear the full five minutes, at the start of the film :partytime:

I had to laugh about the Don Felder's question. I was like, "Oh boy. This is going to be interesting." I like his answer to what he thought about it. I don't blame him for not completely answer the question. He didn't want to take sides and he definitely didn't want to make Glenn and Don mad with his opinion on the situation. Smart move to say no comment.

I hope to post it on Youtube. It looks like they do post the interviews after the event. So I will continue to keep an eye on it.

I am not at all surprised to hear about this lawsuit. There were several mentions of pending litigation with Felder after the initial lawsuits were settled. However, it does surprise me if the litigation only involved Felder and Henley. If it were, in fact, about Hotel California since Glenn is also a credited songwriter on the song, I would expect he and/or Eagles, LTD. would have also been involved. I guess there is information that we are not aware of that would explain it.

I'm really sorry I missed Joe's interview. And kudos to him - there are times when "No comment" is the absolute classiest and best available answer to a question! :applause:

An educated guess at the band. Marilyn Martin & Ricky Washington on backing vocals and percussion. George "Chocolate" Perry on bass (including Talk-Box!) and it looks like Bury's own, Ian Wallace (R.I.P.) on drums. I couldn't even guess who the keyboard player is.

I'm really hoping the whole show will surface.

I just wondered what happened to G"C"P. He was/is a fabulous bass player. According to wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_%22Chocolate%22_Perry, George "decided to retire in 1992, due to long-standing problems with agoraphobia"

45 minutes in, Joe plays his unreleased, studio demo version of The Chrystals' There's No Other (Like My Baby), featuring Rick and another pal, who has since died, Jimi Jamison of Survivor, plus guitarist, Wayne Perkins.

The show closes with Joe and Rick playing live. Indian Summer is cut completely but we do hear an abridged version of Help Me Thru The Night. Joe says "I wrote this for my beautiful ex-wife, plaintiff" :unimpressed:

Even when he was drunk, Joe was an impressive guitarist and an entertaining showman but I've never enjoyed the videos I've seen from his late 80s early 90s era, even though I love his neglected, 1992 Songs For A Dying Planet album. Joe was much better, with the Eagles, after he'd sobered up.

Around the time of the MTV Unplugged show, Joe toured with Ringo's first All Starr Band, which included stars such as, Ringo, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Billy Preston, Nils Lofgren, Dr John and Clarence Clemons. Joe promised he'd bring some friends with him for the, MTV Unplugged recording, so they billed it as Joe Walsh & Friends.
Joe turned up with just, bassist pal, Rick Rosas, rather than the number of well-known friends MTV were expecting, hence the inclusion of, an out-of-his-depth, Jules Shear and an obviously, busking it, Dr. John. The whole show looks thrown together. Joe apparently, performed a solo version of Desperado but it's never been broadcast.

It's a bit more enjoyable watching it, in retrospect. At the time, it was a rare and troublesome exposure to my musical hero in decline...

I'd love to watch a genuine acoustic show from Joe, especially if he cut out all the funnies. He's got some great acoustic tunes.

Maybe Joe didn't think he could make it through the entire song so he choose to do it this way. I, personally, could care less about the performance or the choice of songs - I'm just glad he did a song to honor Glenn's memory.

I agree, IABAD. Its the thought that counts. Joe could had easily not sang that song or even paid tribute to Glenn but he did. I'm surprised he got through the song. I can't really tell if he was getting emotional, but he probably was. I thought Joe did a great job. I feel bad for the people who's going to the Detroit show since I think Joe said he will do a few more songs to pay tribute to Glenn. Their won't be a dry eye in the house for that show.

I tried looking for a better video or a video that was straight ahead instead of on the side, but I don't think I have found a video yet.

Here's a video of the picture at the end. I think I heard there's a picture at the beginning, but I still haven't found a whole video. I've never seen this picture before. The picture has Irving in there too.

Well, OK. I realise it must have been hard, but most of it was sung by the backing singers & it was very ragged.

I don't think I can deal with this any more.

I strongly disagree with this. That was a wonderful version of the song and Joe was smart enough to get very talented singers to sing the harmonies. They did an EXCELLENT job on this moving tribute.

I thought it was very moving. And yes, it's the thought that counts. I'm sure it wasn't easy for Joe.

I just want to hug Joe. He's really taking this hard. A little audio of Joe talking about Glenn's death. He doesn't go into depth, but he say he misses him.

I don't mean this in a crass way but Joe's comments almost indicate a slightly open door as to the Eagles joining together in the future, "we'll revisit it at some point" whereas Don was very final and unambiguous in saying the Eagles were over.

It's hard to say because the audio doesn't include the question that Joe was responding to.

I think Joe was talking about opening up more on Glenn's death later down the road, but right now. Its too hard to think of what to say. I don't think he meant the guys are getting back together. He just meant open up more about Glenn's death.

I found the whole interview on Joe. You have to go to May 10th podcast. Maybe we will hear the question to that short clip. I think they just took out that part to give Joe's opinion on Glenn's death and how its affecting him and the others.

Poor Joe, I want to give him a hug too. :( I agree with Shun too and think it was more of just figuring out what to say or maybe discuss something public for us fans.

That's the way I heard it too. That nothing has been settled or even discussed.

I think Joe's comment on Glenn was omitted from the May 10th podcast. I'm glad he said something and is doing the tribute in the concert. It may be emotional for Joe but he also gives the audience a chance to show their support and that has to help. It's quite something to hear them singing along and see them standing so early in the show and once that's done, everyone can relax.

Agreed.

Here's a better video of Joe singing Take It To The Limit. I didn't notice a lot of the pictures of Glenn in the background on the screen. I just knew about the last picture, but they were some great pictures of Glenn.

I also found a video of Joe saying he's dedicating this song with love to his brother or something like that.

Here's the other one with Joe saying he's dedicating Take IT To The Limit to Glenn. The video is shot from the side of the stage, but you get a better view of the pictures on the screen.

I'm seeing a lot of sites offering cut price One Hell Of A Night ticket. That, along with Joe announcing U.S. dates with J.D. And The Straight Shot, has put paid to my hopes of the tour with Bad Company being extended to include Europe. It's really very disappointing but Waddy and Joe seem to be hitting it off;

Here's some Walsh covers to listen to:

I'm not familiar with Fireball Ministry but I like their version of Barnstorm's Turn To Stone better than Buchanan's https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/103348

Guilty Of The Crime by the 90s band Joe gave up to rejoin the Eagles with Frankie Miller on lead vocals (Joe on guitar and Backing Vox) https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/84788/versions

and the Foo Fighters, Life Of Illusion. I've never got the Foo Fighters but they're obviously big Walsh fans https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/83508/versions

I just took a peak at Joe's latest set list and he's jilted Analog Man in favor of a cover of Sly And The Family Stone's Everyday People. It's a bit of a puzzler unless he's expressing his feelings about the result of the UK's brexit referendum.

You can't see much as it's far away and out of focus but, at last! I've found some YouTube footage of Joe's band performing Sly And The Family Stone's anthem to multi-cultural living, Everyday People Scoobie Doobie Doo! :yay:
