Austin, how was your vacation ? The weather has been crazy here. Last week it reached a high of 61 degrees and was in the 50's for the most part. The week before we had the Artic temps with it only getting to a high of 23 all week. Tonight there is a chance of a dusting of snow. Saturday and today are cold and windy. Later in the week it is supposed to warm up to the 50's again. Global warming is here to stay.

We got an inch of snow in two hours yesterday. It's been above freezing all day. Supposed to be in the fifties tomorrow. Then another temperature drop. I understand that Mother Nature likes variety, but this "all four seasons in one week" stuff has got to go!

It was short, but very nice! Got some sun, shopped a bit, lounged around a lot, and ate out about every night! It was much needed, and really was a nice getaway.

We had another round of icing and sleet overnight. Another day of school missed here and surrounding area in the boondocks of Missouri! That makes 17 days missed since January 1st! Never heard of that here before and I'm 62 years old! We've always had snow and ice but not constantly every day! It rained most of the day yesterday which was helping to melt the ice off and then it got cold enough last night to turn it back to ice! And, we will probably miss again tomorrow because the low tonight is to be 17*! No way for the roads to get any better until it warms up, which it is supposed to get to 44* later tomorrow!
Mother Nature has lost her marbles here! It's crazy! http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/freezing.gif

Brooke, do the kiddos there have to make up all the bad weather days? In my kids school district in Texas if school was out for bad weather, which is very few if any, they had to make up the days missed. Which usually meant the last day of school was extended into summer vacation until all days were made up. Just curious if other states/schools did this?

Hi ETG ! Here in NJ/NY metro area if kids miss school due to bad weather they can take it from their Easter vacation/spring break or add days on at the end of the year. One year my poor nephew went until June 30th, which is the last day they can extend the school year. Yesterday we had a mix of snow, sleet and rain. I got one inch of snow. Today will be in the 40's but feel colder due to the windchill factor.

Yes they will have to make up at least 10 days. There is talk that they will be forgiven for the rest, but I'm not betting on it. They will find out tomorrow how many and what the makeup days will be. In the past they used holidays like MLK day, Presidents Day and Easter break but they are talking about just adding to the end because they were going to get out so early (May 10th) this year anyway.
Hopefully the county roads are thawing today so they will be back to school tomorrow. Our main problem is the ice packed county roads that the busses can't get around on. Hey, it's made it over freezing! 37*!!!! Heatwave!

Wow, that is a lot of school to make up! I think the most days mine ever made up was 5, that was all that was missed, and that went into the first week of June.
Temps here have been up and down, currently a cloudy 69*.

Hopefully they will only have to make up those 10 days. Gee, that's a way early release date by our standards, the earliest ours have ever gotten out is Memorial Day weekend.
Since we normally do not get snow that actually sticks around down here, we usually get ice instead, some people have no idea how to drive on it. So its usually best to stay home and off the roads until it thaws out, which takes just a day or two. I'll send some of our warmth today your way, we are now up to 74*. It's crazy.

It snowed last night. But now it's raining, so everything is a 2" slushy mess. Woke up to no power this morning, but it wasn't the weather's fault. Someone hit a pole a mile or so away. (Okay, so maybe the weather had a part; the car slid off the road into the pole.) There is nothing in our house when there is no power: no lights, no phones (yes, we still have a landline, although I have a cell), no heat, no water. Yes, it was absolutely so much fun getting ready this morning. I am actually wearing the same thing I wore on Monday because I knew where the complete outfit was. (Not that I think any of the guys at work will notice.) We do have power at work, and it's supposed to come on at home about 10am (went off about 5:30am).

Summer has mostly made it here, finally, although we are flooding everywhere! Thankfully, I don't live that close to a river. The Mississippi is 25 miles away, but the tributaries are also flooding which has caused much disappointment for our farmers. They can't get anything planted and a lot of what has been is drowning or has flooded. 90 degrees here today which will help dry out, but more rain expected for the next 2 weeks! Ugh!

Thank you Brooke! And FF! I am fine but it took forever to get home last night with all the detours and back roads. However I am NOT complaining because I got home safely and the house was fine. My area (northwest Houston) did not get hit as hard but I work downtown and downtown was surrounded by water. There is a bayou that runs right beside and partially thru downtown and for the past 5 years, it has started flooding when the rains get heavy. I feel really bad for the people who are dealing with this again. It is so sad. :-(
Thank you for the prayers and positive thoughts as they are needed for Houston, Beaumont, Winnie and many more cities/communities down here.

Our storm was not nearly as bad as they forecasted, thank goodness! Actually, it made me mad that they made such a big deal about it and we nearly missed the snow completely! Everyone was preparing for 4-6 inches of snow and we, maybe, got an inch! Also an inch and a half of rain Friday night.
It just seems like our meteorologists hype it up big time and get everyone scared to death then it fizzles out! I told everyone at work Friday that we probably wouldn't get anything since they were so sure we would!

My grandma always said wait till Mother's Day to plant tomatoes so we went ahead and planted in the cold! We also put cages and plastic around them and covered the tops because a frost was predicted for Monday morning. I also planted lots of annual flowers and then took them to the garage for the night. It got down to 34 yesterday morning but they are all ok.

We are getting the remnants of Laura here in Virginia as I am typing this, but it's almost a non-event compared to what others have gone through. It will soon be out in the Atlantic Ocean and, hopefully, be gone for good by this evening.
BTW Brooke - I know Soda lived in Beaumont some during her childhood, but I can't remember exactly when. Her parents now live in Houston.

After many many hot days here in Mormonland, It's finally raining! sadly, it's only today as tomorrow the temperature shoots back up to the mid 80s. Ugh, I am so done with summer I could scream. ...However as this will be my very first time living where it snows, I'm a little apprehensive about winter.

It's snowing here in northern Utah. Not a snow storm, just a light dusting, but the overnight temperature last night was around 17 degrees. It's still pretty surreal to me, because I have never lived in snow. I grew up in San Diego and lived my teen and young adult life in Sacramento, which doesn't get snow. So I'm thinking this is awesome, but at the same time freezing my butt off. Thank the gods for space heaters and Snuggies.

The weather here today is overcast, it drizzled earlier. However, for the most part the weather has been beautiful here ! Temps between 65 - 75 and the leaves have all turned with beautiful fall colors. This is my favorite time of the year. It was such a horrible hot and humid summer this year that I could not wait for Fall to come. I love snow ! I know it is not always fun to drive in but I love a beautiful snow fall. Last winter I only got about an inch - it felt like the winter that never was. I do miss Day Light Savings Time when it end though. I love the extra hour of sunlight.
Elle81 - Enjoy your first snow fall !
Wow KW - Snow later in the week ! We are suppose to get heavy rain Thursday into Friday - it's from the Hurricane that will hit New Orleans. I feel so sorry for everyone on the Gulf Coast. They have already had enough of hurricanes.
GA - My silly question for the day ! Does Ireland have snow plows ? How much snow do you get in the winter ? Thanks !

New Kid In Town, I'm going to try to enjoy it. I just hope it's not a lot of snow. My roommate said when they moved here back in 2002, their first winter had snow that went up to their knees! I don't think I'm ready for that.
KW, my favorite season is Fall/Autumn. The colors of the trees, the slight nip in the air, Halloween. I adore this time of year. I don't like summer or winter, too much of one type of weather condition. And I wouldn't mind spring, if it just didn't make my allergies act up.

Ok where I live in Dublin is lowland so we really don't get much at all. A dusting maybe. A couple of inches would be 'significant' but only if it 'sticks'. We had nothing last winter or the winter before. In winter 2017-2018 we had storm Emma which dumped more snow on us than we'd seen in about a decade but thats unusual. It shut the country down for about 10 days!
The North and west and the mountains get a but more.
The main city councils would have snow ploughs but they don't get a lot of use! We don't do snow tyres or anything like that. Snow is too rare!!

Speaking of snow, we're having it today! It's not accumulating because the ground is too warm, but it's been snowing lightly all day. Pretty early for snow for us in Missouri, although it snowed on Halloween last year about an inch.
Not ready for cold and dreary. The trees have been pretty but it has been mostly cloudy for several days so you can't really tell how pretty they are.

I am a summer gal. Love being outside feeling the sun, going to the beach, etc. I just wish it wasn’t so humid in CT. Would love to move somewhere dryer but then I’d miss the ocean. My second fave is fall. The foliage is beautiful, the air is crisp, but bearable and the deer are more out and about in my yard (I dig watching them). And I love pumpkin flavored everything so bring it on! Spring is a distant third. It’s just extended winter, so it seems and then rainy chilly yuck. And winter is so distant it doesn’t register on the list. While the snow is beautiful and even the ice on the trees is pretty, i just can’t get warm and I just hate being inside all the time. I think this week will end with rain as well NKIT, but the weather peeps love to talk snow so who knows.

Georgia weather in December is unpredictable. It's very common to go from shorts and t-shirts weather (70s-80s) to some of the coldest temperatures Georgia will get for a winter season. Just the week before last, we went from highs near 80 to a high of 45, practically overnight (the low the following night dropped to 25). For now, the weather seems to have calmed, with the next seven days having lows around 40 and highs in the low-mid 60s. I enjoy cooler weather, and this is my ideal weather- warm enough to enjoy the outdoors and to not make my joints hurt, but cold enough for there not to be any gnats or mosquitoes.

We had a Nor'easter yesterday into today(ended about 8am) ! I got around 8 inches of snow. This is the first big storm in at least two years. Last year I only had an inch of snow all winter long. My two sisters who live in So. Jersey just had rain the whole time. My one sister who lives at the shore said they had appx. 40 mph winds and massive waves - 4 to 7 feet, which is huge for this area. It has been cold and sunny since this morning and supposed to be the same tomorrow. Winter has arrived !

Over here in North Carolina, aka the next place to need the ark, they called for snow starting last Friday, and going off and on through Monday. Instead it started raining, and raining....and raining. And now my husband's truck is stuck in his mom's normally very solid yard. We no longer have mud. We have soggy brown mush. Sun came out for the first time since Thursday (not Friday) today. More rain in the forecast. Please send large sponges and surf boards. And snorkels. We're going to need snorkels.

Southwest Georgia is finally getting a break from the rain. I believe it rained about 12 inches in about as many days. It'll rain tomorrow, but will be dry for the rest of the week, with lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s and sunshine! This is my ideal weather.
Oh yeah, my central heating quit on Friday. The replacement parts won't be here until Thursday, so 2 space heaters and the oven it is, then. I cannot complain because those poor people in Texas have it much worse.

The weather here in southeast Texas has been wonderful the last two days, sunny and warm (high 60s/mid 70s). It’s such a stark contrast compared to last week, when there was snow (which made for some lovely pictures) and sub-freezing temperatures, compounded with no electric power. We were very fortunate that we at least had heat from our gas fireplace and were able to use our gas stovetop to heat up food. We also had water, thanks to my husband diligently running water through our pipes ever so often, including during the night. We had made the decision to drain our pool a couple of months ago to avoid all the maintenance headaches during winter. That probably saved it b/c other people are dealing with busted pipes and pumps and costly repairs with their pool.
We are used to power going out in our area, mainly b/c the main road near our subdivision is being widened, a project that has lasted a couple of years. However it usually last from a few minutes to maybe an hour or so. We were not expecting it to be out for hours and hours.
The power went out right when the Richie Furay virtual concert was about to begin a couple of months ago. The hubs managed to fix our temperamental generator but then the power came on at that point. Well, the same thing happened last week. The generator would not kick on, and after several attempts he finally managed to get it to work. Believe it or not the power came on almost immediately after that. This was Wednesday around noontime and thankfully it stayed on for good.
The experience sucked but like so many countless others, we managed. A few others were not so lucky and that is sad. Hopefully we (including our state leaders) have all learned something from this.

Ireland is currently experiencing quite a heatwave the last week or so. Temperatures are just about hitting 90 F and while I know thats common for many of you in America its quite tiring here. Salt Lake City is in a valley, just like Sacramento. And just like my beloved hometown, Mormonland is sandwiched between two areas prone to wildfires. The Utah fire season has been rough this summer. Iti used to be in SoCal our fire season was in November. Now it is almost all year round. Sometimes it's hard to imagine a fire so big it's destroying towns and cities. When you think it's only Sept and they are talking about maybe the end of the year to get the fire out. Our fire dept. now has a fleet of converted Blackhawk helicopters for firefighting. They can fly at night and in times and places other helicopters can't. Part of the problem is for years people wouldn't let the forest service clear out the dead pine trees. They have a bark beetle. You can now see all the brown trees in pictures. When they dry out and fall they're like having paper laying around in the woods The ones still standing but brown are so flammable they go up like a roman candle.
In my tract we have a lot of firefighters or firefighter families so there are a lot of the Thin Red Line flags out in support of them.

So we here in the Salt Lake valley did not get a white christmas, as the rain from christmas eve and the 23rd washed pretty much all the snow away. Which made people here in northern utah complain "it's not fair! we want snow!". Well, Mother Nature heard them and dumped a bunch of snow on us the day after christmas. And she ain't done yet, as another snow system is headed our way. However, this time it's going to be so much worse. We're going to have a snow squall, which is a sudden burst of heavy snow, which will drop the temperatures down into single digits on Saturday night. Single Digits! I feel so sad for the animals and humans that have to be out in this.
