Welcome back, LT.

I'm currently missing the warmth of my bed as I prepare for a day of college and the hour long drive to get there. (I've tried to make looking on here a pre-college morning routine.)

Welcome back LT. Do you have some fascinating trivia too? :)

Technically, no, since all I'm doing at the moment is watching the morning news and drinking coffee. Sooooo not fascinating. ;-)

OT: Had you spoken with me on Monday, you might have found my circumstances slightly more interesting, since you would have found me at the Peabody Hotel Duck March in Memphis, Tennessee, sazerac in hand. There I met a lovely group of Brits on holiday when we shifted slightly to the left in order to allow them a better sightline from the mezzanine. Chatting ensued. :-) It was a most enjoyable break in a long day.(Although, I'm not at all complaining about the length of the day, which ended with a terrific evening at B.B. King's Blues Club and their house band. :singer: That was fantastic!)

Sounds like a quality bit of relaxing time!

EDIT: Just finished another bowl of jackfruit and fake ice-cream. It was a big can of jackfruit that I bought and the rest of my family are very conservative about trying new food, so it's up to me to finish it.

I decided that a lecture I've got to give at 2pm REALLY needs to include a topic that I didn't understand clearly enough to explain (*). So, I'm really deep in background reading right now. But, I think I've cracked it and am good to go.

(*) There's a big difference between understanding something and being able to explain it - they don't say 'the best way to learn something is to teach it' for nothing.

Welcome back, Luvy! How intriguing about your long road trip. Were you on vacation?

AT: you didn't say if you enjoyed the jackfruit or no. I thought of our conversation the other day when I was at a "green market" and they had a big jackfruit display.

AT: you didn't say if you enjoyed the jackfruit or no. I thought of our conversation the other day when I was at a "green market" and they had a big jackfruit display.

It was OK, but I think I prefer mango. Having said that, I ate tinned jackfruit and I'm comparing it to fresh mango. So, that may be an unfair comparison. Also, I really like fresh mango. So the comparison may not be as negative as it initially looks.

The tinned jackfruit I ate was very 'even' in texture, and it had a mild taste. Both mango and pineapple are perhaps similar, but have more interesting flavour and (in the case of pineapple) texture. It worked well with (non-dairy) ice cream.

It was good that you posted as it meant that I dug it out of the pantry and ate it. Otherwise it might have just gone to waste in a year or two.

I was mildly adventurous and tried something new at the aforementioned green market: poke

The first few bites were good but then the look and consistency of the raw tuna started to get to me and I cooked it in the microwave. I'm the same way about eating steak or hamburger: it must be well-done and not have any pink or red.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poke_(fish_salad)

Speaking of trying new things: Luv, did your sazerac have absinthe in it? That's something I've wanted to try but it was illegal up until a few years ago.

Apparently, the law is still very convoluted: "In the United States, Absinthe is not a controlled substance but its sale in bars and liquor stores is banned. Absinthe is however legal to purchase and possess." Huh?

Annoying Twit
10-23-2017, 01:40 PM
I have been a vegan for decades now, but I wasn't when I lived in Japan. Hence, I have eaten perhaps more than my share of raw tuna in my life.

Looking at the ingredients of poke, it looks to be something that I would like. The raw fish has an unusual texture and little flavour. The dipping sauce, or at least soy sauce in the poke should make a difference.

PS: If anyone goes to Japan, or elsewhere that does this, do NOT buy the sashimi that is marked down in the supermarket at the end of the day. It didn't do me any harm, but was slimy and seriously not nice.

NightMistBlue
10-23-2017, 02:10 PM
I did like the sauce, very much: it was a pinky-orange color and had a wonderful, fresh flavor. I added a dash of wasabi for some punch.

Luv is keeping mum on her absinthe experience, I see. We shall wait her out and eventually she'll crack. Luv, did you know that Joe Walsh lived at the Peabody for a time? Back in his drinking days. I'm not sure how much he remembers.

I'm watching TV - a programme about Queen Elizabeth 1st secret service. I've a cold too so feeling a bit fragile!!

We watched the first episode of that. It was dreadful. William Cecil was not the Spymaster; he was the Secretary of State. Francis Walsingham, who wasn't mentioned until about halfway through, ran the spy network, although he did report to Cecil. Mary Stuart was Elizabeth's second cousin, not first. The cheap attempts at dramatisation were tacky. I hate to see my favourite historical period traduced in such a way. I half expected Philippa Gregory to show up.

Sorry you're not feeling well.

So sad about losing your mare CAinOH - it must have been very heartbreaking.

Thanks. Unfortunately, losing horses is part of what we do. We take in retired Thoroughbred broodmares and give them a home for the rest of their lives, with proper veterinarian, farrier, nutritional, and dental care. And, of course, lots of love. We're talking older mares, some not in the best of health when they come to us.

Thing is, this is our first passing in over two years, so while not surprising or shocking, it still upsets us and affects the herd dynamics. I'm just hoping this doesn't mean this is going to be a bad year for losses. Sometimes that's just the way it is.

Sitting at work... working, kinda.

Big project needs to be done by Monday. Thought of something to add to it, so I came in. Our accounting person was already here trying to get caught up on year end stuff. She said one of the other guys had just left, and another other guy came in shortly after I got here.

This sucks. Usually after the election we gear down a bit until the end of the year. This year, the Secretary of State decided the counties needed to do one more thing before the end of the year (and before the current Secretary of State leaves office). So we're printing, folding, and mailing.

But that isn't even the project I'm working on. The SOS stuff is just getting in the way of all the other stuff.

I just love working Saturdays... not. Especially since almost two months ago we were all working Saturdays leading up to the election. Can't even complain about the bosses, because I am one. (And everyone who is or was in at work today is a boss. Yeah, we bosses work so the others don't have to.)

Sorry, got a bit bored because the program I've got running for my project is working pretty well at the moment. I know as soon as I leave, it will blow up. (And I wrote the program, so I have no one to blame but myself.)

Thank goodness for the internet and this board. Got something good to read for a bit!

Hi CAinOH - What is your job ? Sounds interesting.

I work for and partially own a family-run company in Ohio (my brothers are the other owners, but one of my sister-in-laws and my nephew work for us, too) that does voter registration software and support for 66 (almost 67) of the 88 counties in Ohio (Ohio does have 88 counties, but that 66/67 may not be totally correct; I worry about the software, I don't keep track of the number of counties). We used to do election night support (i.e., count votes), but we don't do that any more. (Don't miss that one bit!) We do our best to keep out of the political side of elections; our focus is not the parties but supporting the Boards of Elections. I can tell you that there was a lot going on in Ohio this past year to keep elections out of the hands of the wrong people and keep voter registration data safe.

In the past few years, we've branched out and also started a digital printing company. We print calendars, business cards, banners, do car wrapping and printing for vehicles... if it goes through our equipment, we print it! That wasn't my decision to do that, and I'm not exactly sure why my brothers decided we needed another company to work when we're all getting closer to retirement age, but it has come in handy with getting small jobs done that I need for the nonprofit I work with.

We just got another county as a new customer, and I was converting data this afternoon. Pretty much just watching the software run to make sure it kept going.

Milton has not been adjusting well. I think being in the carry for so long upset him a lot. He's stayed under the bed for two days and has only come out to eat and do his business. We coaxed him out for a bit today but he's back under the bed again now. :(

Oh, poor Milton. Some cats just don't seem to adjust to change. I think they're the "grumpy old men" of the animal kingdom. Be better soon, Milton!

ETA: Maybe Milton caught the trailer to the new Cats movie? That's some pretty scary stuff right there, deep into uncanny valley. I might join Milton under the bed.

We went to see The Lion King today. You know what's scarier than watching the Cats trailer on YouTube? Watching it full screen in the theater! My husband was not prepared. After the trailer was over, he looks at me and asks: "What the h*ll did we just see?"

So true! When I have my 3 grandkids over, I'm always exhausted when they leave! Makes me wonder how I made it through my own three kids!!! Besides the obvious of being younger then, I just didn't follow them around every minute of the day and worry what they were up to. You get a little used to the daily chaos of kids when they are your own!

Our big splurge this year was putting in our dream pool, which my husband designed & built with a weather-resistant glass-like surround, so it can be fully removed in the summer and just be a normal outdoor pool, and then have the surround attached in the colder weather to be used year-round.

Many reasons factored into our decision to build our pool, which included having some additional space to entertain, as we designed our home as an updated mid-century modern open floor plan with sliding doors to the back yard -- so it gives everyone more space to spread-out and relax; another reason is our fearof allowing the kids to swim in the water on the Cape directly behind our house due to all the shark activity in our area in recent years.

Yet, another reason is because one of the products my husband is working on is an electronic hard covering that slides over our pool when it is not in use, which turns it intothe look of a beautiful brick patio and is sturdy enough to entertain on. Not only is this a nice design feature, but it is a great safety feature as well, as we set a security code so it cannot be opened when it is not in use -- so we don't have to worry about someone jumping in the pool and possibly injuring themselves when we're not around.

But one of the biggest reasons we put the pool in this year, is it is in lieu of taking our son on a big summer vacation this year, which is a big year for him, as hestarts Kindergarten next month. We feel bad that we made the decision to forego a summer vacation because we didn't want to leave our almost 1-year-old behind-- plus I'm pregnant -- so we're trying to make the summer as special for Matty as possible.

In addition, as long as he does all his chores and helps with his baby brother -- every Friday is the day we let Matty decide what we will do. I put a list of possibilities on the refrigerator, and he is always looking it over and you can see his little brain just ticking away. I always tell my husband that this is where Isee a lot of my father in Matty, as my father is a highly respected litigation lawyer. I remember reading one story profiling him when I was in high school that highlighted a lot of the highprofile cases he won, and talked about his "boyish Dennis Quaid-likecharm" that "made the female jurists fall in love with him and the male jurists want to be him -- or at least his best friend."

Matty's definitely inherited this trait from my dad. This morning he walked over to the fridge, filled his cup with ice, opened thefridge and poured himself some Crystal Light, then he closed the fridge and took the list off the door and paced around slowly around the kitchen island where Matt and I were sitting, and Matty was studying the list and drinking his beverage, and then he started asking questions, such as, "So, if we go to Water Wiz in Wareham -- we will still have time to go to the drive-in inWellfleet tonight and see The Lion King, right?"

When I pointed out to Matty the 2 places were at the complete opposite ends of the Cape -- and it would take us about 1 hour and 15 minutes to drive to the drive-in -- and if wewant a good spot and the chance to hit the snack bar that he loves there, as well as the miniature golf and soft-serve ice cream area -- that we could stillgo -- but we wouldn't get our perfect spot, and we wouldn't have time for miniature golf -- so he thought about it and said, "I'll tell you what --I'm willing to leave Water Wizz a little early."

My son just cracks me up sometimes on how willing he is to make such big compromises :)

You would think with having his own pool that he wouldn't be so interested in water parks, but Ithink it has just made him love being the water all the more. I choose not to go into any public pools while I'm pregnant, but our baby, Jeff, loves the kiddy area, and there is a nice area where our baby can relax in the stroller and I can sit in some shade and watch my husband and son keep going up and down their favorite long slide, as it's not too steep, and as much as my son likes to act like he's a brave bigboy, I think he likes the fact that he gets to share a double tube with Matt -and I don't know which one of them have the bigger smiles on their faces as they land in the pool at the end and then rush right back up the stairs again.

So, that's what we're off to do today -- enjoying the day at Water Wizz and the night at the drive-in.

If you have ever seen the movies Grown-Ups or The Way, Way Back -- they both filmedscenes at Water Wizz.

It's an absolutely beautiful, sunny day here on Cape Cod -- and I hope you all have the opportunity to get out and have some fun today, as well!

Checking social media from time to time to see who is "in town." Dave Chappelle is having a block party in the Oregon District of Dayton tomorrow. So far we've heard Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have been spotted. We're not going, but I know a few people who are. The tickets were free, but they're all gone now.

Heck, I just want to see Dave Chappelle. He has a farm in nearby Yellow Springs, and he's been spotted at the college at the end of our road several times (historical black college: Wilberforce University). About everyone I know has seen or met him (including my husband) but apparently he's avoiding me. :)

No Bradley Cooper...

Chance the Rapper, Taleb Kwali, Teyana Taylor, and Thundercat performed. Michael Che and Jon Stewart spoke. Dave Chappelle hosted... and Stevie Wonder closed out the night. Chris Rock was seen close to the stage, but I haven't seen where he actually performed or spoke.

Kanye held a "Sunday Service" in a nearby park yesterday morning. He had a bunch of local kids involved with music and choir with that event.

Apparently, Dave Chappelle called Mayor Nan Whaley the afternoon after the shootings and proposed this. No city funds went for security... and the party goers started picking up the trash themselves before leaving last night.

It's been a rough few months for Dayton. Big ole KKK rally that cost the city $650,000 to "protect." Next weekend, 15 tornadoes devastated northern parts of the city and surrounding areas... then three weeks ago, the shooting.

Here's People's run-down of the event:

I have to watch it every single year. This is what I like in movies and entertainment - humor. Even if it's a little cheesy or grotesque. If it doesn't make me laugh, smile, or get me out of my own head it's not good!

Yesterday I spent the entire day decorating the tree and helping my parents prepare for having the whole family here (grandkids included) for Christmas. It was exhausting, although I was happy to help. They've become too old to do it themselves. :(

Today, we have quite a project. We are going to take a big family photo while the whole gang is here, including my sister's new husband - a big family portrait. The photographer has suggested we all wear the same color. The only problem is we don't all own the same shade of forest green, which is what we decided the color should be (I'm thinking this makes thing difficult - why not an easy color like navy - but anyway).

So the bright idea is that I should go shopping and find shirts for everyone today. Mom and Dad are coming with me.

I have a feeling this is going to be a huge nightmare. My parents cannot stay on their feet too long without tiring out and being in pain, yet they insist on coming, and while I have a concept of what I want in terms of shirts (I'm thinking of henleys for everyone ;) ), can we really find nice forest green henleys in everything from XXL to youth large for the guys, and for three ladies that wear petite sizes and one who is tall and skinny like a model? And one woman insisting she wears a medium but if I buy her a medium it is not going to fit her because no, she does not really wear a medium anymore? NIGHTMARE!

Oh, no! (Shudders at the thought). I sure hope that everything went as well as it could, or better yet, opted to simply all wear solid color shirts....or order on the internet and get next day delivery. I am the one who gets stuck with those kinds of projects in my family ("single people have so much free time", don't you know), :roll:so I can relate.

So sorry for all the stress, Soda. Hope it turns out okay so that in the future whenever you look at the family portrait, it will give you good thoughts instead of a nightmare. I'm sure the photographer is well-intended, but, this isn't a wedding that takes months to plan. If this suggestion had been made months ago, that would be one thing - but, as you said, what are the chances of being able to match the wardrobe for a large family of all shapes and sizes in a moments notice at this time of the year? :woah: Yeah - thanks a lot photographer! :cuss:

Ha ha ain't the the truth??

Random Eagles related stuff that happened last couple of days, I went to three different stores in a row, I was in and out quick and each played a Henley song...End of the Innoncence, Heart of The Matter and Boys of Summer...a Henley Trifecta!😂😂

Plus I was at Goodwill browsing cds and records....you never know and I found these! Not in best condition at all, cover wise, but records look nice shape. And hey they were a buck! I kick myself because I found a prestige copy at Savers and passed it by (why???) But thought I'd share I was happy!

2493. I tried making larger but failed. Anyways if you don't know...Netherlands has appearances by Don Henley, JD Souther, Joe Walsh, Joe Vitale, and Joe produced and played guitar on Souveneirs and Don Henley,Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner, Kenny passarelli, all appear on it. Also interesting because there is an arrangement by Jimmy Haskell on it (Joe did two songs with Haskell on california 99...Jessica Stone and California Fairy Tale) and Jody Boyer has an appearance

Glory hallelujah, everyone has left! And I can tell you how it all turned out.

It was an EPIC FAIL in every way.

I'm trying to decide how much of the miserable detail I should get into here.... I'll spare you most of it. After hours of searching, I found something - gave up the idea of hunter green (impossible) and went with navy blue. I got navy blue polo tops for the guys and because I couldn't find a cute plain navy top for the girls being sold in all of the various sizes so close to Christmas, I picked out something like this shirt (https://www.macys.com/shop/product/karen-scott-embellished-3-4-sleeve-top-created-for-macys?ID=9945243&CategoryID=255&swatchColor=Deep%20Black#fn=BRAND%3DKaren%20Scott) . When I presented them to the rest of the fam.... suffice it to say all of my fears came true and then some.

My younger sister hated what I picked out so much that we wound up going out on December 26 and spending several more hours looking for something else. (I believe the descriptor she used was "awful" - any my older sister didn't really like them either). We brought the new ones home to more drama, as Dad wasn't exactly thrilled about having to buy more tops. This, on top of other drama about her returning her Christmas gift from my parents (my dad is touchy about that - I say just let her return it and get what she wants, but he feels insulted), led to my younger sister and her family leaving earlier than planned.

Let's just pray to the Lord God in Heaven that the photos turned out well!

This, on top of other drama about her returning her Christmas gift from my parents (my dad is touchy about that - I say just let her return it and get what she wants but he feels insulted), led to my younger sister and her family leaving earlier than planned.

Let's just pray to the Lord God in Heaven that the photos turned out well!

Sorry to hear this, Soda. Expectations are so high at this time of year and sometimes the holidays bring out the Grinch in people. I have my fingers crossed for good photos for you and your family. In the meantime, put on an Eagles tune.

Wow - what a fiasco, Nanc. As you said, hopefully, the picture will turn out great and make it all worthwhile.

I have been sitting around nursing a cold or bronchitis for the last two days - feeling pretty lousy. One of my two remaining aunts passed away last Monday, so the day after Christmas, one of my cousins, my brother, and I drove up to Massachusetts to attend the funeral. As we were traveling home Saturday, I began getting hoarse, but I felt okay. But, by yesterday afternoon, I was getting worse. Hopefully, it's just a cold and will go away after it runs its course.

Dreamer, I'm so sorry about your loss. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

What an ordeal, Soda! In the end, despite your distress, you will have a family photo to cherish. Even if "Aunt Betty" has her eyes closed, or "little Joey" is making a face. I could never even get family to let ME take a group photo. Many have passed on, and that chance is forever lost.
You were given a ridiculously impossible task. You did good!

Exactly! I was actually the one who suggested this photo. My older sister has a new husband since the last one and my parents might not be around much longer. We need one last portrait.

Thanks for the sympathy, everyone!

Dreamer I am sorry to hear of your loss. Always tough, and around the holidays too. Take care.

My day today will be consumed with waiting for xfinity to show up and connect my internet and tv. I had it with frontier constantly crashing. Over the holidays, my WiFi barely existed. I hate Frontier....worst part is I had to cut my Dish Networks....so my treasured dvr collection is gone....trying to find out if I can access it somehow. They don’t want receiver back...it has all the Joe appearances from axstv (won’t have that with xfinity 😞). Hell freezes over, Don Felder stuff, farewell 1, Fleetwood Mac, well you get the picture. I know I can get hard copies of stuff, but does anyone know how to access these dvrs for content? I’ll check out YouTube. Really want the axstv stuff. Especially Joe with Brian Johnson, what a great interview.

I feel you! The same thing happened to me! It gave me the motivation to cut the cord and switch over to streaming. I got a Roku for Christmas, signed up for YouTube TV, and I'm in the process of switching over to a better internet provider. It's a whole lot of bother, though. :( Good luck to you!

I can empathize with your difficulties, KW. When they came out with DVRs I was unimpressed. You couldn't just hit "record" when you saw something you wanted to tape. Your recording couldn't be brought to a friend's house, and the recording space was limited. I wanted a physical copy in my hot, little hands! So I never got a DVR. But now, one of my VCRs died. The other one has ancient connections and would not work with my new tv. (old one died). I bought a gizmo on amazon that was supposed to connect the two, but didn't work. So I've got these cool music award shows, etc from the early '80s that I can't play. Will have to try something else.

Over a year and a half ago I shut off my DirecTV and WiFi. I am mostly next door seeing about my elderly mother. I had internet installed at her house, and watch her cable if there's something I can't miss. For now, if a show comes on while I'm at work (5 nights a week), tough luck!

I hope you don't have to wait all day for the installers to show up!

We cut the cord with Dish last fall and I certainly know how you feel too! We also have YouTube TV and I do have a cheap little dvr player that I can still use, but rarely do. Streaming is a bit aggravating since it doesn't come on the tube instantly like the shows on Dish did, but we're learning to handle it.

All this technology stuff is a big pain for me!

Ya well xfinity took awhile, but we are up and running. Like night and day compared to frontier for wifi. Still getting used to the xfinity interface, but so far so good. When the contract runs out, maybe I'll finally cut the cord as Brooke and Soda has done....freyfollower, I feel your pain too ! I have a ton of VCR tapes sitting collecting dust, I even have a vcr but have problems connecting as well. But at least this internet pain is over, it was hard going on the border with my phone! ☺

P.s. I searched xfinity for Eagles content which didn t show anything except,REELZ breaking the band. I heard it's bad acting and wigs to boot. I wanna watch it for how bad it is....has anyone seen it?

My husband would go through severe withdrawal without internet and wifi.

As to "Breaking the Band", go here:
